RPL for Mechanics: Certificate III in Automotive from Workshop Experience

Motor mechanics with years in the workshop often have everything a Certificate III certifies, just without the Australian paperwork. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets that hands-on experience be assessed toward a Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology (or Heavy Vehicle, Automotive Electrical, and related qualifications).

What an RTO can recognise

A Registered Training Organisation (RTO), regulated by ASQA, assesses your demonstrated competence against the units of the qualification — diagnosis, servicing, repairs, electrical and engine systems — and issues the qualification where your genuine evidence meets the standard.

This recognises real workshop experience. It is not a way to obtain an automotive certificate for someone who has not done the work — assessments are practical and evidence-heavy for exactly that reason.

Evidence that works for automotive RPL

• Photos and videos of jobs you have done — diagnostics, repairs, servicing, ideally with you working
• Job cards, invoices, service records from workshops you have worked in
• Employer references or a supervisor’s statutory declaration confirming role and duration
• Any prior automotive certificates or licences from your home country
• A practical competency conversation or demonstration with the assessor

How it fits a migration pathway

• Skills assessment. Automotive trade occupations are commonly assessed by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), often through a program that includes a practical technical assessment and a minimum employment history. A qualification supports that assessment but does not replace TRA’s requirements.
• The visa. A positive skills assessment is one element of a skilled or sponsored visa application — it does not on its own grant a visa.

A qualification does not guarantee a TRA assessment, and a skills assessment does not guarantee a visa.
