Solid plastering — rendering, float-and-set, texture coating — is skilled, physical work that many tradespeople learned entirely on the job, often overseas. Recognition of Prior Learning lets an experienced plasterer have that work assessed toward a Certificate III in Solid Plastering (CPC31220 at the time of writing — confirm the current version on training.gov.au), the nationally recognised qualification for the trade. Solid Plasterer (ANZSCO 333212) also appears on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List, which is why plastering RPL enquiries so often turn out to really be migration questions.

What the qualification covers

Internal solid plaster (float and set), external cement rendering, acrylic and polymer texture systems, external insulation and cladding finishes, decorative and heritage mouldings, curved and specialist surfaces, and the substrate preparation that underpins all of it. The qualification is issued by a Registered Training Organisation regulated by ASQA once your evidence meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and does not assess or issue anything.

The evidence plasterers actually need

Stage-by-stage photo evidence — substrate prep, scratch coat, finish coat, curing; for texture systems, base and finish stages rather than just the final wall
Range — internal and external work, new construction and restoration, flat work plus quoins/mouldings/curves where claimed
Employer references with dates and duties, or invoices, contracts and business records for self-employed plasterers
Corroborating records — payslips, tax records, anything anchoring the timeline
A practical demonstration is common: finish quality and flatness are judged by eye and straightedge, so RTOs frequently want to watch you work

RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For a visa, the assessment that matters is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 333212 — a separate process with pathways that vary by passport and where your experience was gained. Whether a Certificate III strengthens your case or is an unnecessary cost is exactly the sequencing question a short consultation resolves — start with a free assessment.

Common questions

Can a plasterer or renderer get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced solid plasterer can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Solid Plastering (CPC31220 at the time of writing — confirm the current version on training.gov.au), issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence.

Does rendering experience count?

Yes — cement rendering, acrylic texture coating and external insulation finishing systems sit at the heart of the solid plastering trade in Australia, alongside float-and-set internal work and decorative mouldings. Documented rendering experience is core evidence, not an extra.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Solid Plasterer (ANZSCO 333212) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.
