Fitters and machinists keep Australian mining, manufacturing and processing running, and both occupations sit on the skilled lists — Fitter (General), ANZSCO 323211 and Metal Machinist (First Class), 323214 — including the Core Skills Occupation List. The matching qualification for Recognition of Prior Learning is the Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) (confirm the current version on training.gov.au) — distinct from the Fabrication Trade certificate that covers welders and boilermakers.

What the qualification covers

Machining — turning, milling, grinding, and CNC where claimed — to drawing tolerances; fitting and assembly of mechanical equipment; maintenance, bearing and seal work, alignment; hydraulics and pneumatics; and precision measurement as the thread through all of it. An ASQA-regulated Registered Training Organisation assesses your evidence against those units and issues the qualification where it meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and takes no part in the assessment.

The evidence fitters and machinists actually need

Work to documented tolerances — drawings you machined to, measurement records, QA sheets; precision is the trade, so evidence of measuring beats photographs of chips flying
Machining range — manual and CNC, turning and milling, materials worked; programs and setup sheets where CNC is claimed
Maintenance evidence for fitters — strip-downs, alignments, bearing replacements in progress; shutdown work carries weight
Employer references with dates and duties, or contractor records
A practical demonstration is common — setup, measurement technique and finished tolerance are judged in person

Offshore fitters and machinists

RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that counts is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 323211 or 323214 — separate from the Certificate III, with pathways depending on passport and where the experience was gained. Whether RPL belongs in your sequence is the strategy question — start with a free assessment.

Common questions

Can a fitter or machinist get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced fitter or metal machinist can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical Trade) — confirm the current qualification version on training.gov.au — issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence.

Is this the same qualification as welding and fabrication?

No. Fabrication (boilermaking/welding) sits under the Certificate III in Engineering (Fabrication Trade); fitting and machining sit under the Mechanical Trade. They are different qualifications and different ANZSCO occupations — Fitter (General) is 323211 and Metal Machinist (First Class) is 323214, while welders and fabricators sit elsewhere. Match your actual work before starting.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Fitter (323211) or Metal Machinist (323214) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.

Does WIDEN issue the qualification or run the assessment?
