RPL for Plumbers: Certificate III in Plumbing from On-the-Job Experience

By Keshab Chapagain · Published 2026-06-14

Plumbing is a high-demand trade for skilled migration, and experienced plumbers often have the skills but no Australian qualification. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess that experience toward a Certificate III in Plumbing. Two things matter most here: the qualification and the licence are separate, and the migration step runs through a trade skills assessment.

Qualification vs licence

  • The qualification (Certificate III in Plumbing) is what RPL can produce, by assessing your evidence against the competency standards.
  • The licence is separate. Plumbing is a licensed trade regulated state by state, and obtaining or converting a licence has its own requirements beyond holding the qualification.

RPL addresses the qualification; it does not, by itself, grant a licence. This is the same distinction covered in our building and construction RPL guide.

The evidence a plumbing assessor expects

  • Detailed work history and references confirming the type and duration of plumbing work
  • Photos and videos of jobs you’ve completed (rough-in, fit-off, drainage, gas where relevant)
  • Job cards, invoices, or site documentation
  • Trade certificates or overseas qualifications, if any
  • A competency conversation and, commonly, a practical demonstration

For the full list see the RPL evidence guide, and use a genuinely registered RTO — how to choose a legitimate provider.

Where it fits migration

For migration, a plumbing qualification typically supports a Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessment — often via the Job Ready Program — which is then one element of a skilled or sponsored work visa such as the 482 Skills in Demand. See the broader trades RPL guide and the TRA skills assessment overview. No qualification or assessment guarantees a visa.

WIDEN provides the migration advice and coordinates referrals to genuinely registered RTOs — see how RPL fits a migration strategy. WIDEN is a migration practice, not an RTO, and does not conduct RPL assessments or issue licences.

General information only, not migration advice. Licensing requirements are set by state regulators and should be confirmed. Advice is provided by Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536) after a consultation.

Common questions

Can I get a Certificate III in Plumbing through RPL?

Yes, where you can evidence genuine plumbing experience against the qualification's competency standards. A Registered Training Organisation assesses your evidence and may identify gap training for any units you can't fully evidence.

Does RPL give me a plumbing licence?

No. A qualification and a licence are different things. Plumbing is a licensed trade regulated state-by-state, and licensing has its own requirements beyond the qualification. RPL can produce the qualification; licensing is a separate process.

How does plumbing RPL link to migration?

A plumbing qualification can support a Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) skills assessment, often through the Job Ready Program, which is one element of a skilled or sponsored visa. No qualification or assessment guarantees a visa.
