Roof tiling is learned on rooftops, not in classrooms — which is exactly the profile Recognition of Prior Learning exists for. An experienced roof tiler can have that work assessed toward a Certificate III in Roof Tiling (confirm the current version on training.gov.au), and Roof Tiler (ANZSCO 333311) sits on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List for employer sponsorship.

What the qualification covers

Setting out and installing battens and sarking, laying and bedding tiles, ridge, hip and valley work, flashings and penetrations, repairs and re-roofing, and — inseparable from this trade — safe work at heights and fall protection. An ASQA-regulated Registered Training Organisation assesses your competence against those units and issues the qualification where the evidence meets the standard. WIDEN is not an RTO and has no role in the assessment.

The evidence roof tilers actually need

In-progress photo sequences — sarking and battens before they disappear under tiles, set-out, bedding and pointing, ridge and valley detail, flashing work
Range — new roofs and re-roofs, concrete and terracotta tiles, repairs and storm work where claimed
Heights and safety practice — harness use, edge protection, site inductions; assessors treat this as core competence, not paperwork
Employer references with dates and duties, or invoices and business records for subcontractors
A practical demonstration is common — course alignment, bedding and pointing quality are judged in person

Offshore roof tilers

Evidence review can start from anywhere; the practical usually can’t, and Australian tile profiles, fixings and wind-rating practices differ from many countries — a legitimate assessment takes that seriously. RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that counts is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 333311 — separate from the Certificate III, with pathways depending on your passport and experience. Whether RPL belongs in your sequence is the strategy question — start with a free assessment.

Common questions

Can a roof tiler get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced roof tiler can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Roof Tiling (confirm the current qualification version on training.gov.au), issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence against the qualification's units.

What evidence matters most for roof tiling RPL?

Sequences that show the roof being built, not just finished: battens and sarking, set-out, cutting and bedding, ridge and hip work, flashings and penetrations, plus your working-at-heights practice. References and business records anchor the timeline; a practical demonstration is common.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Roof Tiler (ANZSCO 333311) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.
