Stonemasonry is one of the oldest trades on the skilled lists and one of the most changed by recent Australian regulation — so an honest RPL guide has to start there. Since July 2024, work with engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs is banned nationally, and strict respirable-crystalline-silica rules govern stone processing generally. The trade itself continues: natural stone construction, monumental and cemetery work, heritage restoration and installation are exactly what Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Stonemasonry covers (confirm the current version on training.gov.au). Stonemason (ANZSCO 331112) remains on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List.

What the qualification covers

Working natural stone by hand and machine — cutting, dressing, carving and polishing; construction stonework (walling, cladding, paving, restoration); monumental masonry; templating and setting out; fixing and installation systems; and the dust-control and safety practices that now define the trade. An ASQA-regulated Registered Training Organisation assesses your evidence against those units and issues the qualification where it meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and takes no part in the assessment.

The evidence stonemasons actually need

Work-in-progress sequences — templating, cutting and dressing, fixing and pointing, not just the finished façade or monument
Stream evidence — construction, monumental or heritage work as actually performed; carving and lettering where claimed
Silica-safe practice — wet cutting, extraction, RPE; post-2024, assessors treat dust control as core competence
Employer references with dates and duties, or business records for your own yard
A practical demonstration is common — tooling quality and finish are judged in person

Offshore stonemasons

RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that counts is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 331112 — separate from the Certificate III. Whether RPL strengthens your sequence is the strategy call — start with a free assessment.

Common questions

Can a stonemason get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced stonemason can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Stonemasonry (confirm the current qualification version on training.gov.au), issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence across construction, monumental or heritage stonework.

Does the engineered-stone ban affect stonemasonry RPL?

It reshaped the industry: since July 2024, work with engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs is banned nationally, and strict respirable crystalline silica rules apply across stone work generally. The trade itself — natural stone construction, monumental masonry, heritage restoration, installation — continues, and that is the work an RPL assessment covers. Evidence of modern silica-safe work practices strengthens any file.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Stonemason (ANZSCO 331112) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.

Does WIDEN issue the qualification or run the assessment?
