Cabinet making sits in an interesting corner of the trades: highly skilled, machinery-heavy, and often learned entirely in workshops — family businesses, joinery shops, kitchen manufacturers — with nothing on paper. Recognition of Prior Learning lets an experienced cabinetmaker have that work assessed toward a Certificate III in Cabinet Making (confirm the current qualification version on training.gov.au), and Cabinetmaker (ANZSCO 394111) appears on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List.

What the qualification covers

The trade has two recognisable streams — kitchens and bathrooms (cabinet manufacture and on-site installation) and furniture — over a shared core: reading drawings and cutting lists, machining solid timber and board products, edge treatment, assembly and hardware, finishing, and safe operation of static and portable machinery. Modern workshops add CNC and CAD/cutlist software, which is legitimate evidence too. The qualification is issued by an ASQA-regulated Registered Training Organisation once your evidence meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and has no role in the assessment.

The evidence cabinetmakers actually need

Workshop photo/video evidence — machining, edging, assembly and finishing in progress, plus the machinery you operate (saws, edgebanders, CNC where claimed)
Job documentation — drawings and cutting lists you’ve worked from or produced, delivery/installation photos of completed kitchens or furniture
Range within your stream — carcass and door work, benchtops, hardware and soft-close systems, or furniture joinery and finishing
Employer references with dates and duties, or invoices and business records if the workshop was yours
A practical demonstration is common — machine competence and joint quality are judged in person

Evidence review can start from anywhere; machinery-based practical assessment usually needs to happen somewhere real. RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that matters is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 394111 — separate from the Certificate III, with pathways that differ by passport and where your experience was gained. Whether the Certificate III strengthens your sequence or is an avoidable cost is the strategy call — start with a free RPL assessment.

Common questions

Can a cabinetmaker get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced cabinetmaker or joiner can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Cabinet Making (check the current qualification version and title on training.gov.au — the cabinet making qualification covers kitchens/bathrooms and furniture streams), issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence.

Does kitchen installation experience count, or only workshop work?

Both matter. The trade spans workshop manufacture — machining, edging, assembly — and on-site installation of kitchens, bathrooms and built-in furniture. Evidence across both, or clearly within your claimed stream, is what assessors want to see.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Cabinetmaker (ANZSCO 394111) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.
