Bricklaying is in persistent shortage across Australia’s housing pipeline, and Bricklayer (ANZSCO 331111) sits on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List for employer sponsorship. For an experienced bricklayer — Australian-trained-on-the-job or overseas — Recognition of Prior Learning offers a route to the Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying (CPC33020 at the time of writing — confirm the current version on training.gov.au) without going back to a classroom.

What the qualification covers

Face brickwork and blockwork, cavity construction with ties, flashings and weepholes, control and articulation joints, piers, arches and curved work, reinforced blockwork and core filling, reading plans and setting out, and safe scaffolding and materials handling. A Registered Training Organisation regulated by ASQA assesses your competence against those units and issues the qualification where evidence meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and takes no part in the assessment.

The evidence bricklayers actually need

Photo sequences showing structure, not just finish — cavity construction in progress, ties and flashings before they’re hidden, joint reinforcement, core-filled blockwork; the finished wall alone proves little
Range — residential and commercial, brick and block, straight runs plus openings, piers, arches or curves where claimed
Employer references with dates and duties, or invoices and business records for subcontractors
Corroborating records — payslips, tax records, site inductions, anything that anchors when and where
A practical demonstration is common: gauge, plumb, level and bond are judged in person by a qualified assessor

Offshore bricklayers

RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that counts is Trades Recognition Australia’s for 331111 — separate from the Certificate III, with different pathways depending on your passport and where the experience was gained. Whether RPL belongs in your sequence at all is the strategy question — start with a free assessment.

Common questions

Can a bricklayer get a Certificate III through RPL?

Yes. An experienced bricklayer or blocklayer can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward a Certificate III in Bricklaying and Blocklaying (CPC33020 at the time of writing — confirm the current version on training.gov.au), issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence.

What evidence carries the most weight for bricklaying RPL?

Photo sequences that show structural understanding, not just neat face work: cavity walls with ties and flashings, control joints, piers and arches, blockwork with core filling and reinforcement where claimed. References and business records anchor the timeline; a practical demonstration is common because gauge, plumb and bond are judged in person.

Is the Certificate III the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for Bricklayer (ANZSCO 331111) is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.
