Collision repair runs on two distinct trades — the panel beater who repairs and aligns the body, and the vehicle painter who preps and refinishes it — and Australia lists both: Panelbeater (ANZSCO 324111) and Vehicle Painter (324311) each appear on the skilled occupation lists, including the Core Skills Occupation List. Recognition of Prior Learning offers experienced tradespeople a route toward the matching qualification — Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology or Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology (confirm current versions on training.gov.au). What the qualifications cover

Body repair: damage assessment and quoting, panel removal and replacement, metal finishing and filling, structural realignment and measuring systems, welding and bonding methods used in modern body construction, and working with high-strength steels and aluminium. Refinishing: surface preparation, masking, priming, colour matching and tinting, spray application in booth conditions, blending, and defect rectification. Each is issued by an ASQA-regulated Registered Training Organisation once evidence meets the standard — WIDEN is not an RTO and has no role in the assessment.

The evidence that actually works

• Before/during/after repair sequences — damage, strip, repair and finish; for painters, prep and masking through to the finished blend, not just the glossy result
• Modern methods where claimed — measuring-system printouts, structural repairs, aluminium or ADAS-adjacent work strengthen a body-repair file; waterborne systems and colour-match records strengthen a refinishing file
• Workshop context — booth work, equipment used, quoting/estimating documents
• Employer references with dates and duties, or business records for your own shop
• A practical demonstration is common in both trades — metal finishing and spray quality are judged in person

RPL versus the TRA skills assessment

For migration, the assessment that counts is Trades Recognition Australia’s for your occupation — separate from the qualification, with pathways depending on passport and experience. Common questions

Can a panel beater or vehicle painter get a qualification through RPL?

Yes. An experienced panel beater can use Recognition of Prior Learning toward the Certificate III in Automotive Body Repair Technology, and a vehicle painter toward the Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology (confirm current versions on training.gov.au). Each is issued by a Registered Training Organisation after it assesses your evidence.

Are panel beating and vehicle painting separate occupations for migration?

Yes — Panelbeater is ANZSCO 324111 and Vehicle Painter is 324311, each with its own TRA skills assessment and its own qualification. Both appear on the skilled occupation lists. If you genuinely do both, pick the occupation that matches the majority of your work before starting either process.

Is the qualification the same as a TRA skills assessment for migration?

No. The Certificate III is a VET qualification issued by an RTO. The migration skills assessment for 324111 or 324311 is conducted separately by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). One can support the other, but they are different processes — whether you need both depends on your visa pathway.

Does WIDEN issue the qualification or run the assessment?
