Engineers Australia, the qualification pathway vs the Competency Demonstration Report (CDR), and the right visa

Australia has long relied on skilled migration to fill engineering roles, and most professional engineering occupations lead to points-tested or employer-sponsored visas with a path to permanent residency. For nearly all of them, one body runs the skills assessment: Engineers Australia.

Two ways Engineers Australia can assess you

1. The qualification pathway. If your engineering degree is accredited under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord — or is otherwise recognised by Engineers Australia — you can usually be assessed on the qualification without a full CDR.

2. The Competency Demonstration Report (CDR). If your qualification is not recognised, you demonstrate your engineering competencies through a CDR: three career episodes, a summary statement and a CPD list.

An important warning: a CDR must be entirely your own work. Engineers Australia actively detects plagiarism and ghostwriting, and a dishonest CDR can lead to refusal and a ban on reapplying. A migration agent can guide you on the process and pathway — but the engineering content must be genuinely yours. And note: a CDR is not a VET Recognition of Prior Learning qualification; engineering is assessed by qualification or CDR, not by RPL.

Who assesses engineers for skilled migration to Australia?

Engineers Australia is the assessing authority for most professional engineering occupations. It assesses either on a recognised/accredited qualification or, where the qualification is not recognised, through a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR).

What is the difference between the qualification pathway and the CDR?

If your engineering degree is accredited under the Washington, Sydney or Dublin Accord (or is otherwise recognised), you can usually be assessed on the qualification alone. If it is not recognised, you demonstrate your competencies through a Competency Demonstration Report — three career episodes, a summary statement and a CPD list.

Can someone write my CDR for me?

No. A Competency Demonstration Report must be entirely your own work. Engineers Australia actively checks for plagiarism and ghostwriting, and a dishonest CDR can lead to refusal and a ban on reapplying. A migration agent can advise on the process, but the engineering content and career episodes must be genuinely yours.

Is a CDR the same as RPL?

No. The CDR is Engineers Australia’s own competency assessment for migration, not a VET Recognition of Prior Learning qualification issued by a training organisation. Engineering is assessed by qualification or CDR, not by VET RPL.

Which visa can an engineer use?

A positive Engineers Australia assessment can support points-tested skilled visas (189, 190, 491) and employer-sponsored pathways (482 and the 186 permanent pathway), subject to the current occupation lists and any nomination. The best option depends on your points, age, English and whether an employer will sponsor you.
