Visitor (600) · Staying longer

How to extend a visitor visa in Australia: a new 600 onshore, and what decides it

There is no extension. A visitor who wants more time applies for a new Visitor (600) visa from inside Australia before the current visa ends, and the new visa, if granted, sets a new stay period. Whether it can be lodged at all is decided by the conditions on the current grant, and whether it is granted is decided by whether the Department sees a visit or a person staying on. This guide covers who can apply, the two conditions that matter, the charge, the evidence, what happens to your status while you wait, and when the honest answer is a different visa.

Thirty minutes to know whether a second 600 is open to you, and whether it is the right application at all.

In the consultation I read your grant notice for 8503 and 8558, count your time against the 12-in-18 rule, and tell you whether a further visitor visa is likely to be granted on your reason for staying. If the reason is a partner, a job or a longer plan, you hear which visa that plan needs and what lodging a weak 600 first would cost it.

Why there is no extension

An Australian visa is granted with a stay period, and that period cannot be changed after grant. The only way to stay longer is to hold a new visa by the time the current one ends. For a visitor that usually means a new Visitor (600) applied for from inside Australia, which is assessed as a fresh application against the same criteria as the first: a genuine visit, enough money, an intention to leave, health and character. The word extension is used everywhere, including by the Department's own callers, but the law has no such thing, and thinking of it as an extension is how people miss that the new application can be refused.

Who can lodge onshore

  • Holders of a Visitor (600) without condition 8503, in the Tourist stream applied for in Australia.
  • Holders of an Electronic Travel Authority (601) or eVisitor (651), which cannot be renewed onshore; they apply for a 600 in the same way.
  • Holders of most other substantive visas who have a reason to stay as a visitor after that visa ends, again subject to any 8503 or 8534 on the current grant.

The application must be lodged while the current visa is still in effect. Lodged after it ends, you are unlawful at the time of application, which brings a different set of rules and, for many visas, Schedule 3.

Condition 8503

No Further Stay. If it is on your current grant, no substantive visa other than a protection visa can be granted while you remain in Australia, and an application lodged in breach of it is invalid. It appears on all Sponsored Family stream visitor visas, on many Tourist stream grants where the Department doubted the visit, and the September 2026 package announced it for every new visitor visa once that change starts. The only way past it is a waiver for compelling and compassionate circumstances that arose after grant and were beyond your control, which is a narrow test. Read the grant notice before anything else; the condition is listed there under conditions. The 8503 guide covers the waiver.

Condition 8558

Most visitor visas carry 8558: the holder must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18-month period. It counts across trips and across visas, so a second onshore 600 can be granted and still leave you with only weeks before the condition is breached. People with several trips lose track of the arithmetic; the 8558 calculator does it from your dates. A further visitor visa that would take you past the limit is either refused or granted for a shorter period than you asked for.

The application

  • Lodged online in ImmiAccount, Visitor (600), Tourist stream, applying in Australia. Charge A$630 from 1 July 2026, not refunded on refusal.
  • A stated reason for the longer stay with a defined end: a family event, a medical matter, a course of travel, a return date.
  • Evidence of funds for the whole period, and of what you return to: a job, a lease, family, study.
  • Evidence that you have kept the conditions of the current visa, because a breach is a ground to refuse and to cancel.
  • Health insurance where the stay or your age calls for it, and a health examination if the Department asks for one.
  • A stay period requested that fits inside 8558, not the maximum on the form.

While it is decided

A valid application lodged before the current visa ends comes with a Bridging Visa A, which starts when the current visa expires and keeps you lawful until the new visa is decided. It carries the conditions of the visa it bridges from, so no work, and it ends if you leave Australia; a Bridging Visa B is needed for travel. Processing of an onshore 600 is commonly weeks and sometimes longer, and the bridging visa covers the gap. What it does not do is grant a further stay in its own right; if the application is refused, the bridging visa ends a set number of days later and the choice becomes review or departure.

Why second visitor visas are refused

The visitor visa exists for a visit. The Department reads a further onshore 600 against the time already spent, the reason given, and what the pattern looks like: a person who arrived, applied again near expiry with a general wish to stay, and would do so again. That pattern is refused on the genuine temporary entrant criterion, and a later grant, if any, carries 8503. An onshore refusal can be reviewed at the Administrative Review Tribunal within the time on the letter, and the Tribunal looks at the same question. The applications that succeed show a visit: a wedding in three months, a parent's surgery and recovery, a planned itinerary, with the end written in.

When a different visa is the answer

If the reason for staying is a partner, a job, a business or a long-term plan, a second visitor visa is the wrong application, and lodging it can close the right one: a refused 600 adds a refusal to the file and, after it, the section 48 bar limits what can be lodged onshore. A visitor with an Australian partner looks at the partner visa; a visitor with an employer looks at sponsorship; a visitor who wants to study now applies from outside Australia, since the onshore student route closed for visitors on 2 October 2026. The routes, and the conditions that decide them, are in in Australia on a visitor visa and want to stay.

Questions we get asked first

Can I extend my visitor visa?

Not as such. No Australian visa is extended. What you do is apply for a new Visitor (600) visa while you are in Australia, before the current visa ends. If the new visa is granted it replaces the old one with a new stay period. If your current visa carries condition 8503, No Further Stay, you cannot lodge it at all unless the condition is waived.

I came on an ETA or eVisitor. Can I apply to stay longer?

Yes, by applying for a Visitor (600) in the Tourist stream from inside Australia before the ETA or eVisitor ends. Those visas cannot themselves be renewed onshore. Check the conditions on the grant first: an 8503 blocks the application, and 8558 still counts your time.

How much is a visitor visa applied for in Australia?

A$630 for the Tourist stream applied for inside Australia, from 1 July 2026, compared with A$250 outside Australia. It is not refunded if the application is refused.

What happens to my status while the new visa is decided?

If you lodge a valid application before your current visa ends, you are granted a Bridging Visa A that starts when the current visa expires and keeps you lawful until a decision. It does not carry work rights, and leaving Australia on it ends it. If you lodge after the visa has ended you are already unlawful, and a different set of rules applies.

Why do second visitor visas get refused?

Because the Department grants a visitor visa for a visit, and a further onshore application has to show one: a defined reason, a defined end, funds for the stay, and an intention to leave. Back-to-back visitor visas with no defined purpose are read as living in Australia on a visitor visa, and the refusal commonly comes with condition 8503 on any later grant. An onshore refusal can be reviewed at the Tribunal within the time on the letter.

Can I work on the new visitor visa?

No. Visitor visas carry condition 8101, no work, and the onshore 600 is no different. Working is a breach that leads to cancellation and shapes every later application.

What does the consultation cost?

A$330 inc. GST for 30 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full if you engage WIDEN. For a visitor whose real plan is to stay long term, the session is about which visa that plan needs, not about the second 600.
