How the count works
- Every day in Australia counts, including the day you arrive and the day you leave.
- On each day of the planned stay the tool looks back 18 months and adds up the days in Australia. The first day that total would pass 12 months is the day after your last permitted day.
- Your visa's own end date, and any "must leave by" condition 8531, can come first. The tool shows whichever is earlier when you enter the visa end date.
If the dates show the limit arriving before you want to leave, the answer is a different visa, planned in advance. The visitor visa guide covers the streams and the options when a visa is expiring page covers what is open onshore.
Frequently asked questions
What is condition 8558?
A condition on many visitor visas, including the subclass 600, that the holder must not stay in Australia for more than 12 months in any 18-month period. It is counted across all visits, not per visit, so three four-month trips inside 18 months use the whole allowance.
How is the 18-month period counted?
It is a rolling window, not a calendar block. On any day, look back 18 months: your total days in Australia inside that window must not exceed 12 months. This calculator checks every day of your planned stay against that rolling window.
What happens if I breach 8558?
Breaching a visa condition can lead to cancellation under section 116 and can affect later applications. If a longer stay is needed, the answer is usually a different visa, not an overstay. Ask before the limit, not after.
Does the calculator know my visa conditions?
No. Check VEVO or your grant letter for 8558. Some visitor visas carry 8531 (must leave by a date) or 8503 (No Further Stay) instead or as well, and the 17 September 2026 package will put 8503 on all new visitor grants once the instrument is made.
Check your case
Tell Keshab who you are visiting and why, and he replies personally with whether a longer-stay route exists and what it would take.
How this works: Keshab reads every case check himself and replies personally, usually within a business day: which route fits, what it turns on, and whether a consultation is worth your money. If it is, he offers you a time; if it is not, he says so.
