Can your business nominate a Furniture Maker?
Yes, on: 482 Skills in Demand (Core Skills stream); 186 Employer Nomination Scheme. Sponsorship is three government approvals, in order. Skipping ahead is how applications fail:
- Sponsorship. The business becomes an approved Standard Business Sponsor (or already is one). New sponsors budget weeks for this step.
- Nomination. The sponsor nominates the specific Furniture Maker position — genuine need, salary settings at or above the CSIT (A$79,423), and labour-market evidence where required. Home Affairs (29 September 2026): 50% within 64 days, 90% within 9 months.
- Visa. The worker applies against the approved nomination, with the skills assessment (Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)) where required by passport and occupation. 482 Core Skills visas: 4 months / 9 months.
Occupation eligibility read 6 October 2026 from the Home Affairs skilled occupation list.
The salary you must pay
For a 482 Core Skills nomination lodged from 1 July 2026, the salary must be at least the Core Skills Income Threshold, A$79,423, and at least the market rate an Australian furniture maker earns in the same role and location, whichever is higher. Guaranteed annual earnings only; superannuation is on top. The nominated salary then becomes a floor for as long as the worker is sponsored. Current thresholds · the employment contract.
Labour market testing for this role
Unless an exemption applies, the position must be advertised in Australia before the nomination is lodged, and the evidence goes in with it. The Department sets how long the advertising runs, where it appears and how recent it must be. The current labour market testing rules and exemptions.
What it costs the employer
| Government charge | Amount |
|---|---|
| Nomination application | A$330 |
| Skilling Australians Fund levy (per nomination year) | A$1,200 (turnover < A$10M) · A$1,800 (≥ A$10M) |
| 482 visa application — primary applicant (worker's charge unless the employer covers it) | A$4,015 |
| 186 visa application — primary applicant | A$6,140 |
Charges read October 2026 from the Home Affairs pricing service — all visa fees. The SAF levy and visa charges are forfeited on refusal, which is why the nomination evidence is where the money is protected. Professional fees are separate, fixed and quoted in writing before any work.
Your obligations after the grant
- Pay at least the nominated salary, on terms no less favourable than an Australian worker's, for the whole time the worker is sponsored.
- Employ the worker in the nominated occupation, and keep the records the Department can ask to see.
- Tell the Department of certain changes, including the worker leaving, within the set period.
- Never recover sponsorship or nomination costs from the worker.
- Cooperate with monitoring. Sponsor obligations and monitoring in full.
