Skills Assessment When You Are Self-Employed
Assessors are used to payslips and employer references. A self-employed applicant has neither, and the assessment turns on replacing them with evidence that proves the same three things: that you did the work of the occupation, for how long, and at what level. It can be done, and it is often done badly. This page sets out what replaces the payslip.

Self-employed? Check the evidence before you pay for the assessment.
In the consultation I go through what you hold (registration, tax records, invoices, photos, client contacts) against what your assessor requires, tell you whether it is enough, and whether recognition of prior learning should come first.
What it costs. $330 inc. GST for 30 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full against our professional fee if you engage WIDEN. Advice confirmed in writing after the call. There is no free consultation or free assessment.
What the assessor must see
- That the business existed and you ran or worked in it: registration, licence, tax filings.
- That you did the work of the occupation, not just managed it: descriptions of the jobs, photos, client statements.
- Dates and continuity: invoices and tax records that cover the whole period you claim, without gaps.
- Level: for trades, that you worked at full trade level; for professions, at professional level.
The evidence that works
- Business registration or licence covering the period, in your name or showing your ownership.
- Tax returns or tax-office statements for the business and for you, year by year.
- Invoices or contracts, a selection spread across the years, showing the work and the client.
- Two or more client references on the client's letterhead (or signed with contact details) describing the work you did for them.
- A detailed statutory declaration of your duties, matched to the occupation's tasks.
- Photos or project records that show you doing the work, dated where possible.
When RPL comes first
Trades Recognition Australia generally expects a trade qualification as well as experience. Self-employed tradespeople without one are usually better served by recognition of prior learning to an Australian Certificate III first, using the same evidence, and then the assessment. The evidence work is done once and used twice.
Common mistakes
- Invoices only, with no tax records: assessors read untaxed income as unverified.
- References from family members or business partners only.
- Claiming the whole business's work as your own when you employed others to do it.
- Gaps in the period claimed with no explanation.

Not sure which visa fits you?
Answer three questions. An automated guide points you to the route that usually applies. General information only.
Check your case
Tell Keshab your situation. He reads it personally and replies within a business day with which route fits you and whether a consultation is worth your money. Not an assessment of your file, no advice on it, no obligation.
How this works: Keshab reads every case check himself and replies personally, usually within a business day: which route fits, what it turns on, and whether a consultation is worth your money. If it is, he offers you a time; if it is not, he says so.

Can I get a skills assessment if I am self-employed?
Yes. Assessors accept self-employment with evidence of the business, tax records, client references and a description of your duties covering the period claimed.
Do I need payslips?
No, but you need what replaces them: tax records for the business and for you, and invoices or contracts across the period.
I have no formal qualification. Can I still be assessed?
For most trades, recognition of prior learning to an Australian qualification comes first, using the same evidence.
Are photos enough?
They help show the work, but they do not prove dates, continuity or income. They support tax and business records; they do not replace them.
