Invitation Letter for an Australian Visitor Visa

An invitation letter is not mandatory for the Tourist stream of the visitor visa, but a clear one helps the Department understand the visit. What it must say, who should write it, and the details that make a letter work against you.

Is an invitation letter required?

For the Tourist stream of the visitor visa (subclass 600), no. The Department does not list an invitation letter as a mandatory document. It is supporting evidence: it tells the decision-maker who the visitor is coming to see, why, for how long and where they will stay. Used well, it removes guesswork from an application. Used badly, it raises questions the application would not otherwise have faced.

The Sponsored Family stream is different. There the sponsor is formally approved, and the Department can ask for a security bond. An invitation letter in the Tourist stream creates no sponsorship and no legal obligation on the host.

Who should write it

The person the visitor is actually coming to see: a child, a sibling, a friend. Australian citizens and permanent residents are the usual hosts. A host who is on a temporary visa can still write one, but should state their own visa plainly and should not describe themselves as a "sponsor", because in the Tourist stream nobody is.

Attach evidence of who the host is: a copy of their passport or citizenship certificate, or their visa grant, and proof of address if the visitor will stay with them.

What it should say

  • The host: full name, address, phone, email, and status in Australia (citizen, permanent resident, or the visa they hold)
  • The visitor: full name exactly as on the passport, date of birth, passport number, and where they live now
  • The relationship: how the host knows the visitor, and for how long
  • The purpose and the dates: the reason for the visit (a graduation, a birth, a holiday together) and the planned arrival and departure dates
  • Accommodation and costs: where the visitor will stay, and anything the host will pay for, with evidence of the host’s capacity if they are covering costs
  • The return: a plain statement that the visit is temporary and the visitor will return home, ideally tied to the visitor’s own commitments (a job, a business, family)

Mistakes that make a letter work against you

  • Dates that do not match. The letter says four weeks; the application says three months. The decision-maker now has two travel plans and reason to doubt both.
  • Promises the evidence cannot support. "I will cover all costs" from a host whose own documents show they cannot. Say only what is true and attach proof.
  • Hints of a longer stay. Talk of looking for work, studying, or "seeing how it goes" undermines the temporary intent the application has to show.
  • The word "sponsor". In the Tourist stream there is no sponsor. Using the word invites confusion with the Sponsored Family stream.
  • A template. A letter copied from the internet reads like one. Specific, true details about the visit read better than formal phrasing.

What carries more weight than the letter

The decision turns on whether the visitor genuinely intends a temporary stay and can support it. The visitor’s own evidence carries most of that weight: employment or business at home, property, family who stay behind, enough funds, and a travel history of returning on time. A good invitation letter explains the visit; it cannot stand in for the life the visitor is going back to. If there has been an earlier refusal, the new application needs to answer the reasons given, and the letter is rarely the place to do it.

Questions we get asked first

Is an invitation letter required for an Australian visitor visa?

Not for the Tourist stream. It is a supporting document, not a mandatory one. A good letter gives the Department context for the visit; it does not replace the applicant’s own evidence of funds and of the life they will return to.

Who should write the invitation letter?

The person in Australia the visitor is coming to see: usually a family member or friend. Citizens and permanent residents are the usual hosts. A host on a temporary visa can write one too, but should say so plainly rather than describe themselves as a sponsor.

What should the invitation letter say?

Who the host is and how they know the visitor, the purpose and dates of the visit, where the visitor will stay, what the host will pay for if anything, and the host’s contact details. Dates and details must match the application exactly.

Is an invitation letter the same as the Sponsored Family stream?

No. In the Sponsored Family stream the sponsor is formally approved and may be asked for a security bond. An invitation letter in the Tourist stream creates no formal sponsorship and no legal obligation.

Does a strong invitation letter guarantee the visa?

No. The decision turns on whether the visitor genuinely intends a temporary stay and has the means to support it. The letter helps explain the visit; the applicant’s ties at home carry most of the weight.
