Condition 8503 vs Condition 8534
Both say no further stay: the holder cannot apply for most other visas while in Australia. Condition 8503 sits on visitor visas, sponsored family visas, some 400 and 408 grants and others, and is waived only where compelling and compassionate circumstances arose after the grant, beyond the holder’s control. Condition 8534 sits on some student visas, chiefly those granted with concessions or at the Department’s discretion, carries the same waiver, and carries its own exceptions: an onshore application for a protection visa, a 485 and a Student Guardian visa remains open as the condition is currently written. A visitor with 8503 and a student with 8534 are in the same position for a partner or a skilled application; the student has a door the visitor does not for the 485.

Which side of that line you fall on depends on facts a table cannot hold — your age, score, occupation's lists, and what evidence you can actually assemble. That is consultation territory, not guesswork territory.
