The Subclass 651 eVisitor is a free visa for citizens of certain mostly European countries that allows multiple visits to Australia over a 12-month validity, with each stay limited to 3 months. It is for tourism or business visitor activities only.

Free for eligible Europeans. The eVisitor has no Department charge. If your passport is from the US, Canada, Japan, Singapore or other non-European partner countries, you will use the ETA (Subclass 601) instead, which carries a small service charge.
Who is eligible
The eVisitor is available to passport holders from approximately 35 mostly European countries, including (current list at the date of writing):
- United Kingdom, Ireland
- Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein
- Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland
- Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
- Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Luxembourg, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City
- Romania, Bulgaria

What you can do on the eVisitor
- Tourism — sightseeing, visiting friends or family, recreational activities
- Business visitor activities — attending meetings, conferences, negotiations, fact-finding
- Short-term study or training up to 3 months
- Multiple entries during the 12-month validity
What you cannot do
- Work for an Australian employer in a paid role
- Stay more than 3 months in any one visit
- Undertake formal study longer than 3 months
- Use the visa as a pathway to permanent residence — different visa products apply
Cost
The eVisitor is generally free of charge — no Department of Home Affairs application fee for the standard product at the date of writing. Verify the current fee at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
How to apply
Apply online through ImmiAccount while outside Australia. Most eVisitor applications are decided very quickly — sometimes within minutes — but allow lead time before travel. The Department generally asks for:
- Passport biodata page from an eligible-country passport
- Statement of intent — purpose of visit, intended duration, places to visit
- Confirmation that you meet health and character requirements

Who is eligible for the eVisitor?

What can I do on an eVisitor — can I work or study?
You can undertake tourism activities (sightseeing, visiting family or friends), business visitor activities (attending meetings, conferences, negotiations), and short-term study or training up to 3 months. You cannot work for an Australian employer in a paid role, undertake formal study longer than 3 months, or stay in Australia for more than 3 months in any one visit. If you want to work or study longer term, a different visa product applies.
What is the difference between eVisitor and ETA (Subclass 601)?
Both grant the same rights to enter Australia for short tourism or business visits up to 3 months at a time over a 12-month validity. The key difference is eligibility. eVisitor (651) is for passport holders of certain European countries and is free. ETA (601) is for passport holders of certain non-European countries (US, Canada, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Brunei, Hong Kong) and carries a small service charge. There is no overlap — your nationality determines which one is available to you.
Can I extend or convert the eVisitor while in Australia?
The eVisitor cannot generally be extended in Australia. If you want to remain longer than 3 months, you typically need to apply for a different visa before your eVisitor period expires. Many onshore options have restrictions — for example, a No Further Stay (condition 8503) imposed on some visitor products limits onshore applications. Seek advice before relying on a particular onshore pathway.
