The three PR doors, honestly ranked for a Social Worker
- Employer transition (482 → 186 TRT). Two years with your sponsoring employer on the 482, then the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream — since the November 2023 reforms this works for 482 holders broadly, independent of the occupation lists. For most sponsored workers this is the most reliable plan on the board.
- Direct 186. Social Worker is Direct-Entry eligible: employer nomination + positive skills assessment + three years' experience + CSIT-level salary, age under 45. Home Affairs (04 September 2026): 13 months / 21 months. Faster to permanent than the transition route when the pieces already exist.

Realistic only when your buildable points are competitive — check the invitation rounds tracker for what scores are actually being invited, and remember the 491 leads to the permanent 191 after three years on regional residence and income tests.

Social Worker is eligible for 189 Skilled Independent; 190 Skilled Nominated; 491 Skilled Work Regional. The sequence: skills assessment (Australian Association of Social Workers), an English test where your score materially moves points, then an Expression of Interest — invitations go to the highest-scoring candidates, so your buildable points (English, experience, state nomination, regional study) decide your realistic chances more than the minimum 65 ever will.
Does the 482-to-186 transition depend on the occupation lists?
The Temporary Residence Transition stream requires two years working for the sponsoring employer on the 482 in the nominated occupation — since the November 2023 reforms it is open to 482 holders broadly, which makes "482 now, 186 in two years" the most reliable PR plan for many sponsored workers. The Direct Entry stream, by contrast, does depend on the occupation's list eligibility.
