Electronic Equipment Trades Worker: the realistic routes to PR

Short answer: a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker (ANZSCO 342313) can reach permanent residence via 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (direct permanent residence); points-tested 189/190/491 — plus the sponsored-transition route (482 for two years, then 186) that works regardless of points. Which one fits depends on your employer situation, points and location; the honest sequencing is below.

The three PR doors, honestly ranked for a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker

  1. Employer transition (482 → 186 TRT). Two years with your sponsoring employer on the 482, then the 186 Temporary Residence Transition stream — since the November 2023 reforms this works for 482 holders broadly, independent of the occupation lists. For most sponsored workers this is the most reliable plan on the board.
  2. Direct 186. Electronic Equipment Trades Worker is Direct-Entry eligible: employer nomination + positive skills assessment + three years' experience + CSIT-level salary, age under 45. Home Affairs (29 September 2026): 21 months / 25 months. Faster to permanent than the transition route when the pieces already exist.
  3. Points-tested (189/190/491). No employer needed: skills assessment, English, EOI. Realistic only when your buildable points are competitive — check the invitation rounds tracker for what scores are actually being invited, and remember the 491 leads to the permanent 191 after three years on regional residence and income tests.

Skills assessment — TRA

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) (standard assessment A$795, typically within 120 days, checked August 2026). Mandatory for the points-tested visas and for 186 Direct Entry — and the single biggest piece of work in most PR files, so it is where planning starts, not ends. All authorities, fees and turnarounds.

No employer yet? The honest part

No agent can produce the employer, and paying for advice before one exists is usually money wasted. What works:

  • A complete, specific candidate profile at SponsorTalent, which employers approved to sponsor search directly; it costs nothing.
  • Applications aimed at businesses that already sponsor; their careers pages and job ads say so.
  • The skills assessment (Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)) started in parallel, so an offer converts to a lodgement fast.

Experience but no qualification? RPL for Electronic Equipment Trades Worker

Genuine work experience can be assessed by a Registered Training Organisation toward the Australian qualification. It is worth doing only when it connects to the skills assessment and the visa above. WIDEN is a migration practice, not an RTO.

Sequencing it right

The people who reach PR fastest picked their door early and built toward it: which visa leads, when the English test happens (scores move points more than almost anything), when the assessment is lodged, and — for sponsored workers — what the two-year transition clock means for changing jobs. Getting the order wrong costs a year more often than it costs nothing.

That mapping, for your specific case, is a 30-minute consultation: $330 inc. GST, credited in full toward your fee if you engage, with the advice in writing. Book a time → — or have it in writing, no call, A$550.

How long it takes

The employer route to permanent residence takes at least two years on the 482 before the 186 transition application, or one 186 Direct Entry application where the skills assessment and three years' experience are already in hand (Home Affairs, 29 September 2026: 21 months for 50%, 25 months for 90%). The regional visas lead to the permanent 191 after three years of regional residence and income. On the points-tested route, the wait is set by the invitation rounds, not by a fixed processing time. Current processing times for every visa.

Questions we get asked first

Can a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker get permanent residence in Australia?

Yes — on the current Home Affairs list (read 6 October 2026), Electronic Equipment Trades Worker is eligible for: 186 Employer Nomination Scheme (direct permanent residence); points-tested 189/190/491. Separately, the employer-sponsored transition route (482 for two years, then 186 through the Temporary Residence Transition stream) works for sponsored workers regardless of points.

What does the 186 Direct Entry require for a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker?

An employer nomination, a positive skills assessment from Trades Recognition Australia (TRA), at least three years of relevant full-time experience, competent English, and salary at or above the CSIT (A$79,423 for 2026–27) or market rate. Home Affairs (29 September 2026) reports 186 Direct Entry processing at 21 months (50%) / 25 months (90%). The age limit is 45 at application, with limited exemptions.

How does the points-tested route work for a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker?

Electronic Equipment Trades Worker is eligible for 189 Skilled Independent; 190 Skilled Nominated; 491 Skilled Work Regional. The sequence: skills assessment (Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)), an English test where your score materially moves points, then an Expression of Interest — invitations go to the highest-scoring candidates, so your buildable points (English, experience, state nomination, regional study) decide your realistic chances more than the minimum 65 ever will.

Does the 482-to-186 transition depend on the occupation lists?

The Temporary Residence Transition stream requires two years working for the sponsoring employer on the 482 in the nominated occupation — since the November 2023 reforms it is open to 482 holders broadly, which makes "482 now, 186 in two years" the most reliable PR plan for many sponsored workers. The Direct Entry stream, by contrast, does depend on the occupation's list eligibility.

I'm a Electronic Equipment Trades Worker without an Australian employer. What actually works?

A complete, specific candidate profile where employers approved to sponsor can find you, applications aimed at businesses that already sponsor, and your skills assessment (Trades Recognition Australia (TRA)) started in parallel so an offer converts to a lodgement fast. No agent can produce the employer, and paying for advice before one exists is usually money wasted.

Who assesses Electronic Equipment Trades Worker, and what does it cost?

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) — A$795, typically within 120 days (checked August 2026). The assessment is mandatory for the points-tested visas and for 186 Direct Entry.
