The four-month trap
The pattern I see most: a working holiday maker with four to six months left decides to "look into staying" — and discovers in the final month that every remaining option needed to start two months earlier. Skills assessments take six to sixteen weeks. English tests need booking and sometimes re-sitting. State nomination programs open, fill and close. Employer sponsorship needs the business approved before the nomination, and the nomination before the visa. None of these run in parallel by default, and all of them must finish in a lodged application before your visa ceases — a bridging position only exists once something valid is lodged.
That is why the consultation is worth more in your fourth-last month than your last one: the earlier the map is drawn, the more roads are still open on it.
The pathways WHV holders actually use
- Your current employer. The most overlooked sponsor is the one already rostering you. If they value you, a 482 nomination keeps you working for them for years — and the six-month limitation has workable answers once the process is moving.
- Regional 494 / 491 → 191. If you are outside the big three cities — and much of WHV work is — the regional employer route and state-nominated 491 carry lower competition and a defined permanent pathway. Check your city.
- State nomination (190/491). Points-tested, occupation-list dependent, and timing-sensitive — allocations open and exhaust. The tracker shows who is open now.
- The routes people forget — a partner application where the relationship is real and evidenced; further study chosen strategically rather than desperately; and for trades, RPL turning your hands-on years into the qualification a sponsorship needs.
Which of these is yours depends on your occupation, your points, your postcode and your dates — and pursuing the wrong one first is the expensive mistake. That ordering question is precisely what the session answers.

$220 inc. GST for 30 minutes on Zoom; $440 for the extended hour when several pathways or family members are in play. Either is credited in full toward your engagement fee if you proceed — so proper advice ends up costing nothing extra — and every session ends with a written summary you keep. My working holiday visa expires in a few months — is it too late?
Usually not, but the margin is thinner than it feels. Whatever you pursue must be lodged before the visa ceases, not merely started — and skills assessments, English tests, state nominations and employer approvals run in sequence, each taking weeks to months. The consultation exists to establish which sequence still fits inside your dates, this week rather than in your final month.
Which pathways do WHV holders actually use?
The common ones: employer sponsorship (482 Skills in Demand — and your current employer is often the most realistic sponsor, since they already know your work), the regional 494 and 491 with their permanent 191 pathway, state nomination (190/491) where your occupation and points fit, and for some, a partner or student route. Which applies is decided by your occupation, qualifications, points and dates — not by what worked for a friend.
Can my current employer sponsor me past the 6-month limit?
Often, yes — condition 8547 limits work with one employer to six months, but exemptions and permission exist, and once a 482 is lodged you can generally keep working for that employer while it processes. The order of steps matters enormously here, which is exactly what the consultation settles.
What does the consultation cost and include?
A 30-minute session with Keshab personally is $220 inc. GST; complex situations (several pathways in play, family included, tight deadlines) take the 60-minute extended session at $440 inc. GST. Either fee is credited in full toward your engagement fee if you proceed, and you leave with the advice in a written summary. A refused application forfeits its government charge — from $4,015 on a 482 — which is the money this half hour protects.
Do you work with people outside Sydney?
Yes — consultations are on Zoom and everything is lodged online. WHV clients book from every state, farms and mines included, and from overseas between visas.
