TAFE RPL vs Private RTO — Which Should You Use?

A Certificate III or Diploma gained through recognition of prior learning is the same nationally recognised qualification whether TAFE or a private registered training organisation (RTO) issues it. What differs is how long it takes, what it costs, how much evidence and gap training is asked for, and how careful the provider is. For migration, careful matters more than fast.

Want RPL for a visa pathway? Get the pathway right before choosing a provider.

In the consultation I check whether an Australian qualification actually helps your visa or skills assessment, which qualification and evidence it needs, and what to look for in a provider. I am a registered migration agent, not an RTO, and I do not issue qualifications.

What it costs. $330 inc. GST for 30 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full against our professional fee if you engage WIDEN. Advice confirmed in writing after the call. There is no free consultation or free assessment.

TAFE and private RTOs are both RTOs

TAFE institutes are government-owned registered training organisations. Private colleges are privately owned RTOs. Both are registered and audited by the national regulator, ASQA (or a state regulator for some providers that operate only in Victoria or Western Australia), and both can only issue qualifications that are on their scope of registration. A Certificate III issued by either is the same AQF qualification.

How they differ in practice

  • Speed. TAFE RPL often runs on fixed intake and assessment cycles; private RTOs are usually quicker to start and finish.
  • Evidence and gap training. TAFE often asks for more evidence or requires gap training before awarding the qualification. A careful private RTO will too. One that asks for almost nothing is a warning sign, not a bargain.
  • Practical assessment. Good providers of either kind assess you in person or by workplace observation, not only on paperwork.
  • Range. Not every TAFE offers RPL in every trade; private RTOs often specialise.

Fees and subsidies

Fees vary widely by qualification, state and provider. Government-subsidised places at TAFE are generally limited to Australian citizens, permanent residents and some eligible visa holders, so most temporary visa holders pay full fees wherever they go. See RPL cost and legitimacy in 2026 for typical ranges.

How to check any provider

  • Search the RTO on training.gov.au and confirm the exact qualification code is on its current scope.
  • Check for ASQA regulatory decisions against it.
  • Ask how assessment works: who assesses you, whether there is a practical observation, and what evidence they need.
  • Be wary of guaranteed outcomes, very fast turnarounds with no assessment, or “pay now, certificate next week” offers. See how to choose an RPL provider.

ASQA can cancel qualifications that were issued without proper assessment. A cancelled qualification can undermine a skills assessment or visa application that relied on it, so a slower, properly assessed RPL is usually the safer choice for migration.

If the qualification is for a visa

An Australian qualification through RPL is not always what a visa needs. Some pathways need a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority, which has its own rules on qualifications and employment evidence, and some need recent work experience as well. Work out the pathway first, then the qualification. See RPL vs skills assessment and the RPL qualification checker.

University RPL is different

Universities such as Deakin, Macquarie, ECU and ACU use “recognition of prior learning” to mean credit towards a degree for earlier study or work. It shortens a degree rather than awarding a vocational qualification, and each university runs its own application process. Ask the university’s admissions or credit team directly; it is a separate process from vocational RPL.

Questions we get asked first

Is TAFE RPL better than a private RTO?

The qualification is the same from any properly registered RTO. TAFE is often slower and more thorough; a good private RTO can be quicker and still thorough. What matters is proper assessment.

Can I get RPL at TAFE on a temporary visa?

Often yes, but subsidised places are generally for citizens, permanent residents and some eligible visa holders, so most temporary visa holders pay full fees.

How do I know an RPL provider is legitimate?

Check the RTO and the qualification code on training.gov.au, look for ASQA decisions against it, and avoid providers that guarantee outcomes with little assessment.

Is university RPL the same as vocational RPL?

No. University RPL gives credit towards a degree. Vocational RPL awards a certificate or diploma from an RTO.
