Studying on a 482 or 494: what the visa permits, the fees, your family, and why switching to a student visa means leaving

Sponsored workers often want to study: a master’s to move up, a certificate the industry expects, a course toward a different occupation, English for the citizenship test. The visa allows it, because the 482 and 494 restrict work and say nothing about study, and the limit is that the sponsored job has to continue exactly as nominated while the study happens around it. The costs are the international fees and the absence of any government loan, which make part-time study expensive. The partner on the secondary visa can study anything. And a worker who wants to stop working and study full-time discovers that the student visa is now applied for from outside Australia. This guide sets out each of those, and what the qualification does for the visa at the end.

What the visa says about study

The 482 carries conditions 8607, work only in the nominated occupation for the sponsor with the stated allowances, 8501, health insurance, and the notification conditions; the 494 carries 8608 and the same. None of them mentions study. The student visa's conditions about enrolment, attendance and course level, 8202 and the rest, attach to student visas and not to sponsored ones. A sponsored worker is therefore free to enrol in any course, at any level, at any institution, for as long as the visa lasts, and the Department has no interest in it unless the study changes the work. The conditions are listed in the conditions guide.

The sponsored job comes first

The nomination describes a full-time position, and the sponsor's obligations and the worker's condition both assume the worker is in it. A worker who studies in the evenings, at weekends, online, or on days the employer has agreed to as leave is in the position as nominated. A worker who reduces to three days a week to attend classes has changed the position's hours, and the sponsor who agrees to it has agreed to a position that is no longer the one nominated; the Department reads that as a change requiring a new nomination, and a permanent application under the transition stream reads the part-time period as a period not in the nominated full-time position. Study leave agreed in writing for a defined period, with the employment continuing and the return to full-time fixed, is treated as leave; an open-ended reduction is a changed position. The new nomination guide sets out when a change needs one.

Fees, places and loans

Universities and vocational providers classify students as domestic or international by citizenship and residence, and a temporary visa holder is international whatever their intention to stay. The consequences are the international fee for the course, which is a multiple of the domestic fee, no eligibility for a Commonwealth-supported place, and no access to HECS-HELP or FEE-HELP loans, which are confined to citizens, permanent humanitarian visa holders and some New Zealand citizens. The fees are paid up front or by the institution's instalment plan. Permanent residence, when it comes, changes the classification for most courses from the next enrolment, and some workers time a longer course to begin after the grant for that reason. Vocational courses at state-funded providers have their own rules on subsidised places for visa holders, which differ by state.

Employer support

An employer may pay or reimburse a sponsored worker's course fees as a term of employment, and many do for qualifications the business wants; the payment is a benefit to the worker and does not affect the nominated salary, which must still be paid in full. A study agreement requiring repayment of the fees if the worker leaves within a period is a repayment of a worker-side cost the employer advanced, which is permitted if reasonable, and is distinguished from the sponsorship costs the employer can never recover. An employer who requires a qualification for the role, and conditions the worker's continued employment on obtaining it, has changed the position, and the nomination is read against the requirement.

Your partner and children

A partner on the secondary 482 or 494 holds a visa with no work and no study condition and can enrol full-time in any course at international fees, which for many families is how the partner uses the years; the visa runs with the primary holder's, so a four-year degree on a two-year visa depends on the visa being extended, and the partner's enrolment does not itself extend anything. Children attend school as dependants, and whether a state charges fees for the children of 482 holders in its public schools depends on the state and the visa; some charge, some exempt, and the state education department publishes the rule. A child's enrolment at university is at international fees unless they have become a permanent resident. The dependants guide compares the secondary holders' positions.

Switching to a student visa

A sponsored worker who wants to stop working and study full-time needs a student visa, and since 2 October 2026 the student visa is, for most applicants, applied for from outside Australia with the applicant outside at grant; the 482 and 494 holder is in the class that must apply from outside unless an exemption applies. The worker leaves Australia, applies with the confirmation of enrolment, the funds and the genuine student statement, and returns on the student visa; the sponsored visa ends when the sponsor notifies the end of employment and the Department cancels it, or when the student visa is granted. The genuine student requirement reads a worker who has left a sponsored job to study for whether the study is the real purpose, and a course that leads back to the same occupation is examined with that in mind. A worker who can study part-time while keeping the job avoids the whole question. The October 2026 guide sets out the offshore rule.

What the qualification does for the visa

  • Points. An Australian qualification at bachelor level or above earns the education points, and a qualification from at least two academic years of study in Australia earns the Australian study points, on the 189, 190 and 491.
  • A skills assessment. A qualification can be the basis of an assessment in a new occupation, or improve an assessment in the current one where the authority counts qualifications.
  • The 186. The transition stream needs the two years with the sponsor and the occupation; the qualification is not a criterion but can support a promotion the sponsor nominates.
  • The specialist and professional registrations, where a licence or registration depends on an Australian qualification, which some occupations require for the permanent visa.
  • Nothing, for the visa, where the course is for its own sake, which is a perfectly good reason to do it.

The points calculator shows the education and Australian study points.

Study toward a new occupation

A sponsored worker who studies toward a different occupation cannot simply move into it on the current visa, because 8607 confines them to the nominated occupation; the move needs a new nomination in the new occupation, by the same sponsor or another, with the new occupation on the list, a skills assessment where required, and the market salary for it, and a new visa application. The planning is to finish the qualification, obtain the assessment, and have the nomination ready at the point the move is made, so that the worker is never working in an occupation other than the one nominated. A qualification that leads to an occupation not on the list leads to no sponsored visa, and the worker checks the list before paying the fees. The 186 pathway guide covers how a change of occupation affects the permanent route.

Before you enrol

  1. Confirm the course can be done without reducing the sponsored hours, or agree defined study leave in writing with the sponsor.
  2. Get the international fee for the whole course and the payment schedule, and decide whether to wait for permanent residence.
  3. Ask the employer about fee support and read any repayment term against the cost-recovery rules.
  4. Check whether the qualification leads anywhere in visa terms, and if it leads to a new occupation, check the list.
  5. Do not resign to study without the student visa planned, because the route now runs through the airport.

Questions we get asked first

Can I study while on my 482?

Yes. The 482 and 494 carry no condition restricting study; the conditions are about work, for the sponsor, in the nominated occupation, and about health insurance and notification. A sponsored worker can enrol in a part-time degree, a graduate certificate, a professional qualification or an evening course and study alongside the job. What the worker cannot do is let the study displace the sponsored employment: the position stays full-time as nominated, and a worker who drops to part-time hours to study has changed the position without a new nomination.

Do I pay international fees?

Yes. Fee status at Australian universities follows citizenship and residence: a temporary visa holder is an international student for fee purposes, pays the international fee for the course, and is not eligible for a Commonwealth-supported place or a HELP loan. Some institutions and some employers offer scholarships or fee support, and an employer can pay or reimburse fees as a term of employment. Permanent residence changes the fee status for most courses from the next enrolment.

Can my partner study full-time?

Yes. A partner on the secondary 482 or 494 visa has no work or study condition and can enrol full-time, part-time or not at all, at international fees. Their visa runs with yours, so a course longer than your visa needs your visa extended or the family on another visa. Children attend school; whether the state charges fees in public schools for the children of 482 holders depends on the state.

I want to stop working and study full-time. Can I switch to a student visa?

Not from inside Australia, for most. Since 2 October 2026 the student visa is applied for from outside Australia and the applicant must be outside at grant, with narrow exemptions; a 482 holder who wants to become a full-time student leaves, applies with the confirmation of enrolment, and returns on the student visa, with the genuine student requirement examined against a worker who has given up a sponsored job. The sponsored visa ends when the sponsorship does. The question is asked before resigning, not after.

Will the qualification help my visa?

It can. An Australian qualification earns points on the skilled visas, can satisfy the Australian study requirement for some purposes, can support a skills assessment in a new occupation, and can be the basis of a promotion the sponsor nominates. For the 186 transition stream it is not required; the two years with the sponsor are. A worker who studies toward a change of occupation plans the new nomination that the change needs.

What does the consultation cost?

A$330 inc. GST for 30 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full if you engage WIDEN. For a sponsored worker thinking of study the session confirms what the visa permits, what the course does to the sponsorship and the permanent application, and whether the qualification leads anywhere in visa terms.
