Apply for the Resident Return visa before leaving vs Apply from overseas
A permanent resident whose five-year travel facility is about to expire, or has expired, can apply for the Resident Return visa from inside Australia before leaving or from outside after; the criteria are the same, two of the last five years in Australia as a permanent resident for the five-year grant, or substantial ties for the shorter one. Applying before leaving means knowing the answer before the flight, with the grant in hand and no risk of being stranded; applying from overseas is the only route for a resident already abroad whose facility has lapsed, and the one where a refusal means not coming back. Apply before leaving whenever the facility will expire during the trip.

Which side of that line you fall on depends on facts a table cannot hold — your age, score, occupation's lists, and what evidence you can actually assemble. That is consultation territory, not guesswork territory.
