Overseas Student Health Cover vs Overseas Visitor Health Cover
Overseas Student Health Cover is the product the student visa requires under condition 8501, sold by the insurers the Department approves for students, for the length of the visa and covering the family on a family policy; Overseas Visitor Health Cover is the product every other temporary visa with the condition uses, the 482, the 485, the 407, the 870 and the rest, sold by more insurers at more levels. One cannot be used for the other’s visa: a student who moves to a 485 switches from OSHC to OVHC when the student visa ends, and a 482 holder cannot satisfy the condition with a student policy. Both are held for the whole stay, and a lapse is a breach of the condition.

Which side of that line you fall on depends on facts a table cannot hold — your age, score, occupation's lists, and what evidence you can actually assemble. That is consultation territory, not guesswork territory.
