Staying on the 444 Special Category visa vs Applying for Australian citizenship
A New Zealand citizen living in Australia on the Special Category visa, granted on arrival, can stay on it indefinitely with work and Medicare, and since 1 July 2023 can apply directly for Australian citizenship after four years of residence without first holding a permanent visa. The 444 is not permanent residence: it ends on departure and is re-granted on return, carries no vote, no Australian passport, limited access to some payments and student loans, and no protection from cancellation. For a New Zealander who has settled, the direct citizenship pathway is the step that turns the arrangement into a permanent one, and the only reason to wait is a New Zealand position on dual citizenship, which New Zealand permits.

Which side of that line you fall on depends on facts a table cannot hold — your age, score, occupation's lists, and what evidence you can actually assemble. That is consultation territory, not guesswork territory.
