461 New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship vs Partner visa (820/801 or 309/100)
The partner of a New Zealand citizen in Australia is sponsored for a partner visa only if the New Zealander is an eligible New Zealand citizen, an Australian citizen or a permanent resident; the partner of a New Zealander on the ordinary Special Category visa uses the 461 instead, a five-year temporary visa with work rights that can be renewed and that leads to nothing permanent on its own. Since the direct citizenship pathway opened for New Zealanders in 2023, many 461 couples now reach the partner visa by the New Zealander becoming a citizen; until then the 461 is the visa, at a fraction of the partner visa’s charge.

Which side of that line you fall on depends on facts a table cannot hold — your age, score, occupation's lists, and what evidence you can actually assemble. That is consultation territory, not guesswork territory.
