482 position description requirements

The position description is the document that ties the nominated role to its ANZSCO occupation — and a mismatch here is one of the most common ways a 482 nomination comes unstuck. This guide covers what it must include and how to keep it consistent with the rest of the pack. Prepared by Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536).

What a 482 position description must include

  • Occupation & ANZSCO code — the nominated occupation clearly identified.
  • Duties that match the occupation — real tasks that correspond to the ANZSCO tasks, not just a matching title.
  • Skill level & experience — the qualifications and experience the role genuinely requires.
  • Organisational fit — where the role sits and its reporting lines.
  • Consistency — aligned with the Genuine Position Statement, salary evidence and employment contract.

Why ANZSCO alignment is the make-or-break

The nominated occupation drives eligibility. If the duties described don't genuinely match the ANZSCO occupation, the case officer can issue a request for information or refuse the nomination for an occupation mismatch. Getting the duties right — and consistent across every document — is the single most important thing a position description does. See the full 482 nomination document checklist.

Questions we get asked first

What is a position description for a 482 nomination?

A position description sets out the duties, responsibilities and skill level of the nominated role. For a Subclass 482 nomination it must align with the nominated ANZSCO occupation, because the case officer checks that the actual duties match the occupation being nominated.

Why does ANZSCO alignment matter?

The nominated occupation determines eligibility, and a mismatch between the ANZSCO code and the described duties is one of the most common reasons for a request for information or refusal. The duties must genuinely correspond to the tasks listed for that occupation, not just share a job title.

What should a 482 position description include?

The occupation and ANZSCO code, a clear list of duties and responsibilities that match that occupation, the required skills and experience, where the role sits in the organisation, and reporting lines — all consistent with the Genuine Position Statement, salary evidence and employment contract.

Can WIDEN draft the position description?

Yes. We draft ANZSCO-aligned position descriptions for employers and, on a documents-only white-label basis, for fellow migration agents. Request a quote via the form on this page.
