My Visa Application Is Taking Too Long — What Actually Helps

The Department publishes processing times as the time within which most applications are decided, not a promise for any one of them, and there is no legal deadline for most visas. Still, a long wait usually has a cause, and some of those causes can be fixed. This page sets out how to tell which one applies.

Waiting much longer than you should? Have the file read for the reason.

In the second-opinion review I read the application as lodged and tell you whether the delay is ordinary queueing or something in the file, and what to add or do now.

What it costs. $550 inc. GST for 60 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full against our professional fee if you engage WIDEN. Advice confirmed in writing after the call. There is no free consultation or free assessment.

Why applications wait

  • Queue position: applications outside the priority groups wait behind those inside them.
  • Referrals: character, health or security checks that sit with another area or agency.
  • An incomplete file: the officer has a question and has not yet asked it, or asked and is waiting.
  • Linked applications: a visa waiting on a nomination, or family members' checks.
  • Allocation: some applications are simply not yet allocated to an officer.

Processing priorities

Since 19 September 2026, Ministerial Directions 121 and 122 set the order for skilled visas: priority-sector occupations (healthcare, construction, teaching, agriculture, resources and others) first, then specialist and onshore applicants, then offshore applicants without family, then everyone else. An offshore application with family in a non-priority occupation can wait considerably longer than the published figure. See migration changes 2026.

Status enquiries

A status enquiry through the Department's online form, or through ImmiAccount, will generally receive a reply that the application is in progress. It is worth making when the application is well beyond the published time, when circumstances have changed (a job offer that will lapse, a travel date, a family emergency), or when there is a documented reason for urgency; the reason and the evidence matter more than the enquiry itself.

When to escalate

The Commonwealth Ombudsman can investigate unreasonable delay in administrative action after the Department has been given a chance to respond. It cannot order a grant, but it can prompt action on a file that has stalled without explanation. A complaint is usually a last step, not a first.

What actually helps

  • Uploading the documents the officer will ask for before they ask: current police certificates, health examinations, updated employment evidence.
  • Keeping the file current: new passport, new address, a change in relationship or employment, notified promptly.
  • A documented reason for urgency, put clearly and once.
  • A second opinion on the file when the delay is long and unexplained, to find what the officer may be waiting on.

Check your case

Tell Keshab your situation. He reads it personally and replies within a business day with which route fits you and whether a consultation is worth your money. Not an assessment of your file, no advice on it, no obligation.

How this works: Keshab reads every case check himself and replies personally, usually within a business day: which route fits, what it turns on, and whether a consultation is worth your money. If it is, he offers you a time; if it is not, he says so.

Questions we get asked first

Is there a deadline for the Department to decide my visa?

For most visas, no. Published processing times describe how long most applications take, not a limit.

Will a status enquiry speed up my application?

Rarely on its own. A documented reason for urgency, and a complete file, are what make a difference.

Why was someone who applied after me granted first?

Processing priorities and file completeness. Priority-sector and onshore applications go first under Directions 121 and 122.

Can I complain about the delay?

Yes, to the Commonwealth Ombudsman, usually after raising it with the Department. The Ombudsman can investigate but cannot order a grant.
