Sponsoring Disability and NDIS Support Workers — The Honest Answer
NDIS providers ask this more than any other question, and the honest answer saves them money: the frontline disability support worker occupation is not on any of Australia's skilled occupation lists, so the standard 482 is closed to it, and the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement covers aged care, not disability. There are still real routes for some roles and some people, and this page sets them out, along with the arrangements to avoid.

NDIS providers: find out which of your roles can actually be sponsored.
In the extended consultation I go through your roles, locations and candidates and tell you which ones have a lawful sponsorship route (listed occupations, a DAMA, a state-nominated pathway) and which do not, before you advertise or pay anything.
What it costs. $550 inc. GST for 60 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full against our professional fee if you engage WIDEN. Advice confirmed in writing after the call. There is no free consultation or free assessment.
Why the standard route is closed
Sponsorship on the 482 requires the role to be in an occupation on the Core Skills list. Aged or Disabled Carer, the occupation that covers frontline support work, is not on it, and nor is it on the lists for the points-tested visas. Calling the role something else does not help: the Department assesses the duties, and a nomination that labels support work as a listed occupation is refused as not genuine and can put the sponsor under scrutiny.

What is possible
- Listed roles in the same business: registered nurses, allied-health professionals (occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech pathologists, psychologists), and managers in genuinely managerial roles are on the lists and can be sponsored on the 482.
- Designated Area Migration Agreements: several regional DAMAs include support-worker or carer occupations with concessions. A provider operating in a DAMA region can apply for endorsement and then sponsor on the 494 or the 482 labour-agreement stream. See DAMA agreements.
- Disabilities Services Officer (a supervisory or case-management role, not frontline support) is on the regional and short-term lists, which opens state nomination (190, 491) and the 494 for the worker, assessed by Community Work Australia.
- A company-specific labour agreement is possible in principle for a large provider with a demonstrated, sustained shortage, but it is a long and evidence-heavy process.
For workers already in Australia
Support workers on student, graduate or working holiday visas are often valued staff whom a provider wants to keep. The realistic routes are usually through the worker's own qualifications (nursing or allied-health study leading to a listed occupation), a regional DAMA, or a partner or other visa, rather than through sponsorship as a support worker. The six-month-per-employer limit on working holiday visas still applies unless a permission is granted.
What to avoid
- Nominating a support worker under a listed occupation code whose duties they do not perform.
- Paying a third party to "find a sponsor" or to arrange a role. It is unlawful to receive payment for sponsorship.
- Promising a worker a sponsorship that has not been checked.

Can I sponsor a disability support worker on a 482?
No. Aged or Disabled Carer is not on the Core Skills list. A nomination describing support work under another occupation code is refused as not genuine.
Does the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement cover NDIS providers?
No. It covers aged-care providers and aged-care roles. NDIS disability providers are outside it.
Is there any visa for disability support workers?
Some regional DAMAs include carer or support occupations with concessions, and Disabilities Services Officer is on the regional and state lists. Whether either fits depends on the location and the role.
Can an NDIS provider sponsor nurses and therapists?
Yes. Registered nurses and allied-health professionals are on the lists and can be sponsored in the usual way, subject to registration.
