My Job Isn’t on the Skilled Occupation List — What Are My Options?

Many of the jobs Australia is short of are not on the skilled occupation lists: truck driving, personal care, labouring, cleaning, most farm work. If yours is one of them, the standard employer-sponsored and points-tested visas are closed for that job, whatever an employer is willing to do. That is not the end of the road, but the routes that remain are narrower and each has its own conditions. This page sets them out honestly.

Not on the list? Find out which door, if any, is open for you.

In the consultation I check your occupation, location and history against the regional agreements, labour agreements and listed occupations your experience could support, and tell you plainly which route is realistic and what it needs first.

What it costs. $330 inc. GST for 30 minutes by video with Keshab Chapagain (MARN 1576536), credited in full against our professional fee if you engage WIDEN. Advice confirmed in writing after the call. There is no free consultation or free assessment.

Why the list decides it

An employer can only sponsor a worker on the standard 482 for an occupation on the Core Skills list, and the points-tested visas need an occupation on their own lists. The Department assesses the duties, not the job title, so calling a role something else does not help, and a nomination that does so is refused. Check any occupation on the Core Skills list.

Regional agreements (DAMA)

A Designated Area Migration Agreement lets employers in a specific region sponsor occupations that are not on the standard lists, sometimes with concessions on English, age or salary. Each region has its own list and its own conditions, and the employer must be in that region and endorsed. A DAMA can be the one realistic route for some unlisted jobs, but only if a genuine employer in that region will sponsor you. See DAMA agreements.

Labour agreements

Some industries and some large employers have labour agreements with the Government that allow sponsorship outside the standard lists. The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, for example, lets approved aged-care providers sponsor personal care workers. Only employers covered by an agreement can use it. See aged-care sponsorship.

A different, listed occupation

Experience in an unlisted job sometimes sits close to a listed one: a driver who maintains vehicles may be heading towards diesel mechanic; a care worker with study may be heading towards enrolled or registered nursing; a labourer with formwork experience may be heading towards carpentry. Moving into a listed occupation usually means a qualification or recognition of prior learning, documented experience and a skills assessment, so it is a plan over years, not weeks. See recognition of prior learning.

Other visa types

  • A partner visa, if you are in a genuine relationship with an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
  • The Pacific Australia Labour Mobility scheme, for citizens of eligible Pacific countries and Timor-Leste, through the official channels only.
  • A working holiday visa, if your age and passport qualify, for temporary work while you build experience elsewhere.

What to avoid

  • Anyone offering sponsorship for a fee, or a “visa job” that relabels an unlisted role as something else. Paying for sponsorship is unlawful, and a relabelled nomination is refused. See fake sponsorship offers.
  • Spending on a course only because it promises a visa at the end. Check the occupation and the route before you enrol.

Questions we get asked first

Can a truck driver get employer sponsorship in Australia?

Not on the standard 482: truck driving is not on the skilled lists. Some regional DAMAs and company labour agreements have included driving roles, which depends entirely on the region and employer.

Can an aged care worker be sponsored?

Personal care workers are not on the standard lists, but approved aged-care providers can sponsor them under the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement.

If my employer wants to sponsor me, does the list still matter?

Yes. The employer’s willingness does not change the occupation rules; the role must fit a listed occupation or an agreement that covers it.

Can I change to a listed occupation?

Often, over time: a qualification or recognition of prior learning, documented experience and a skills assessment in the new occupation.
