Australian Migration from Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan applicants tend to arrive well-qualified — the real work is converting that into Australian terms: the right assessing authority, English points banked early, and documents where every version of your name matches. IT, accounting, engineering and nursing carry most Sri Lankan skilled applications.

Skilled migration (points-tested PR)

If your occupation is in demand and you have the qualifications, English and a positive skills assessment, you may qualify for permanent or provisional skilled visas — no employer required.

Employer-sponsored work visas

If an Australian employer will sponsor you, the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa lets you work for 2–4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency via the 186 visa. Healthcare, trades, IT and hospitality are commonly sponsored.

Study in Australia (and stay to work)

A Subclass 500 Student visa lets you study, and a 485 Temporary Graduate visa afterward lets you work — often a stepping stone to skilled or sponsored PR.

Partner visas

If you are the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a partner visa leads to permanent residency. Strong, well-organised relationship evidence is decisive — start early.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Years of hands-on experience but no formal qualification? RPL can turn that experience into a nationally recognised Australian qualification — assessed and issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), no classroom study. Sri Lankan applicants most often use it for commercial cookery, aged care and automotive trades. Whether an RPL qualification actually supports your skills assessment and visa depends on your occupation — start with the free RPL assessment.

RPL: உங்கள் பணி அனுபவத்திலிருந்து ஆஸ்திரேலியத் தகுதிச்சான்று

What Sri Lankan applicants usually get wrong

Practical preparation notes — the avoidable issues that most often slow down or unsettle otherwise good applications from Sri Lanka.

  • Initials that expand differently. Sri Lankan names written with initials on one document and in full on another — or ordered differently — are a classic verification snag. Standardise how your full name appears, and carry an affidavit or deed poll explaining any genuine variation.
  • Untranslated Sinhala or Tamil documents. Birth, marriage and service documents issued in Sinhala or Tamil need certified English translations. Budget real time for this — authorities will not assess what they cannot read.
  • Choosing the wrong accounting route. CA Sri Lanka and other local credentials do not map one-to-one onto the Australian skills assessment. CPA Australia, CA ANZ and IPA each map your subjects against required competency areas — check the mapping before assuming you qualify, or that you don’t.
  • Underestimating English points. Superior English is worth 20 points and is often what makes a Sri Lankan EOI competitive. Both IELTS and PTE are accepted; plan to re-sit for the higher band rather than settling for the minimum.

Skills assessment notes for Sri Lanka

Every skilled occupation has a designated assessing authority, and each treats qualifications and experience from Sri Lanka in its own way. Full skills assessment guide by occupation →

  • Engineers Australia — Sri Lanka is a Washington Accord signatory through IESL, so graduates of IESL-accredited engineering programs are generally recognised without a full CDR; other graduates use the CDR pathway.
  • ACS — IT degrees are assessed on ICT content, with the RPL route available for experienced professionals whose degrees are not ICT-focused.
  • CPA / CA ANZ / IPA — subject-by-subject mapping of Sri Lankan accounting and business degrees; local professional memberships help but do not substitute for the assessment.
  • ANMAC + AHPRA — Sri Lankan nurses need both the ANMAC migration skills assessment and separate AHPRA registration, each with its own English standard.

Questions we get asked first

Can I migrate to Australia from Sri Lanka?

Yes. Sri Lankan citizens use points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) — strong for IT, accounting, engineering and nursing — plus employer sponsorship (482/186), study with post-study work (500 → 485), and partner visas. With solid English and a positive skills assessment, Sri Lankan profiles are often genuinely competitive on points.

Which occupations are in demand for migration from Sri Lanka?

Commonly in demand from Sri Lanka: IT & Software, Accountants, Engineers, Registered Nurses. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority (for example ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, ANMAC for nursing, Trades Recognition Australia for trades, and CPA/CA ANZ/IPA for accounting). Occupation lists change, so confirm your occupation before you rely on it.

My Sri Lankan documents use initials and different name orders — is that a problem?

It is manageable, but it must be handled deliberately. Authorities and the Department match your identity across documents, so initials expanded differently, swapped name orders, or a “name known as” all need to be reconciled — usually with an affidavit or deed poll plus perfectly consistent forms. Fix it once at the start; every later application inherits the fix.

Which English test do Sri Lankan applicants usually sit?

Both IELTS and PTE are available in Colombo and accepted equally by Home Affairs — pick whichever format suits you and aim for the band that actually earns points: Proficient at minimum, Superior if you can reach it. Nursing and teaching carry their own stricter English standards set by AHPRA and AITSL respectively, which accept a narrower range of tests.

Can I get an Australian qualification through RPL from Sri Lanka?

Often, yes — if you have genuine, evidenced work experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess your existing skills against a nationally recognised Australian qualification, with no classroom study. Sri Lankan applicants most commonly use it for commercial cookery, aged care and automotive trades. Be careful though: regulators cancel qualifications sold without genuine assessment, and whether an RPL qualification actually supports your skills assessment or visa depends on your occupation — get advice from a MARA-registered migration agent before paying anyone. WIDEN advises on the pathway and refers you to an RTO; WIDEN does not issue qualifications.

How many points do I need for Australian PR from Sri Lanka?

Points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) require a minimum of 65 points, though competitive scores are usually higher and vary by occupation. Points come from age, English, skilled work experience, qualifications and state or family nomination. Use a points calculator and get advice before lodging an Expression of Interest.

Do I need a registered migration agent?

You are not required to use one, but Australian migration advice should come from a MARA-registered agent (MARN holder), not an unregistered consultant. WIDEN is led by Keshab Chapagain, MARN 1576536, who advises on and lodges every matter personally after a paid consultation.
