Moving to Australia from South Africa
The South African corridor into Australia is deep and well established, especially in health, engineering and mining. Eligibility is rarely the problem — evidence is: registration that transfers, documentation that matches, and character checks that cover every country you have lived in.
The migration agent that other migration agents learn from. WIDEN is an OMARA-approved CPD provider — our training is rated ★4.9 by 40+ registered migration agents.
About the CPD →South Africans have long been one of Australia's most successful migrant groups, and the professional corridors are strong: medicine, nursing, engineering, mining, IT, accounting and the trades. Applications are usually decided on evidence quality rather than eligibility — documentation, registration and character evidence are where files succeed or stall.

Skilled migration (points-tested PR)
If your occupation is in demand and you have the qualifications, English and a positive skills assessment, you may qualify for permanent or provisional skilled visas — no employer required.
- Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent (permanent, points-tested)
- Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated (state nomination)
- Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (→ 191 permanent)

Employer-sponsored work visas
If an Australian employer will sponsor you, the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa lets you work for 2–4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency via the 186 visa. Healthcare, trades, IT and hospitality are commonly sponsored.
Study in Australia (and stay to work)
A Subclass 500 Student visa lets you study, and a 485 Temporary Graduate visa afterward lets you work — often a stepping stone to skilled or sponsored PR.
Partner visas
If you are the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a partner visa leads to permanent residency. Strong, well-organised relationship evidence is decisive — start early.
What South African applicants usually get wrong
Practical preparation notes — the avoidable issues that most often slow down or unsettle otherwise good applications from South Africa.
- Underestimating the police-check trail. Australia requires police certificates from every country where you have lived twelve months or more in the last ten years — a real issue for South Africans who have worked in the UK, UAE, Middle East or elsewhere in Africa. SAPS clearances also take time. Start them early; they are a common cause of avoidable delay at the end of an otherwise complete file.
- Document name and identity mismatches. Maiden names, married names, initials versus full names, and older certificates issued in different formats often disagree across your ID, passport, degree and employment records. Every document should tell the same story, with a linking certificate explaining any change, before you lodge.
- Treating registration and skills assessment as one step. For doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other regulated professions, the migration skills assessment and the right to practise are separate approvals with separate rules. Doctors in particular should establish early whether specialist recognition through an Australian College or the AMC pathway applies, because the timelines differ enormously.
- Assuming mining experience transfers without evidence. Australian mining and resources employers do sponsor South Africans, but competency evidence, tickets and site-specific certifications matter. Your years count for far more when they are documented with references naming duties, sites and dates.
Skills assessment notes for South Africa
Every skilled occupation has a designated assessing authority, and each treats qualifications and experience from South Africa in its own way. Full skills assessment guide by occupation →
- AMC and the Medical Board (doctors) — South African-trained doctors commonly qualify for competent authority or specialist recognition pathways depending on qualifications and specialty, which can be substantially faster than the standard examination route. Establishing which applies to you is the most valuable early step in the whole process.
- ANMAC and the Nursing and Midwifery Board (nurses) — South African nursing qualifications are assessable, with the outcome-based assessment applying to many internationally qualified nurses. The skills assessment and registration run separately and should start together.
- Engineers Australia (engineers) — South African engineering degrees accredited under the Washington Accord may qualify for a faster route than a full Competency Demonstration Report. For mining, civil and mechanical engineers this is often the difference between a three-month and a nine-month start.
- Trades Recognition Australia (trades) — Electricians, boilermakers, fitters and diesel mechanics are assessable offshore. Licensed trades additionally require a state licence to work unsupervised — plan for it alongside the visa.

Can I migrate to Australia from South Africa?
Yes. The main routes for South African citizens are points-tested skilled visas (189, 190, 491) where your occupation is listed and your score competitive, employer sponsorship (482 leading to 186), and regional visas (494, 491), which are especially relevant for engineers, health professionals and trades where regional employers are actively hiring. Professional registration is a separate process from the visa and generally determines the overall timeline.
Which occupations are in demand for migration from South Africa?
Commonly in demand from South Africa: Doctors and specialists, nurses, engineers (civil, mining, mechanical, electrical), IT professionals, accountants, electricians, boilermakers, diesel mechanics. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority (for example ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, ANMAC for nursing, Trades Recognition Australia for trades, and CPA/CA ANZ/IPA for accounting). Occupation lists change, so confirm your occupation before you rely on it.
Is regional Australia a realistic option for South African professionals?
Very much so, and often the faster route. Regional health services, mining operations and engineering firms sponsor readily and compete for fewer candidates. The 494 leads to permanent residence through the 191 after three years, and the 491 offers the same via a points-tested route — with much of Australia outside the three largest cities counting as regional, including Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong and Perth for some programs.
Can my family come with me, and what does that change?
Yes — partners and dependent children are included in skilled and sponsored applications as secondary applicants. It increases the government charges, the health and character evidence required, and the funds you should be able to demonstrate, but it does not make the application harder to approve. Partners with their own listed occupation and good English can also add points, so it is worth assessing which of you should lead the application.
How many points do I need for Australian PR from South Africa?
Points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) require a minimum of 65 points, though competitive scores are usually higher and vary by occupation. Points come from age, English, skilled work experience, qualifications and state or family nomination. Use a points calculator and get advice before lodging an Expression of Interest.
Do I need a registered migration agent?
You are not required to use one, but Australian migration advice should come from a MARA-registered agent (MARN holder), not an unregistered consultant. WIDEN is led by Keshab Chapagain, MARN 1576536, who advises on and lodges every matter personally after a paid consultation.
