The mechanics that matter are distinctive: official verification of Chinese qualifications, consistent pinyin across every document, and realistic planning now that the old investor routes have closed.

Study in Australia (and stay to work)
A Subclass 500 Student visa lets you study, and a 485 Temporary Graduate visa afterward lets you work — often a stepping stone to skilled or sponsored PR.
Skilled migration (points-tested PR)

Employer-sponsored work visas
If an Australian employer will sponsor you, the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa lets you work for 2–4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency via the 186 visa. Healthcare, trades, IT and hospitality are commonly sponsored.
Partner visas
If you are the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a partner visa leads to permanent residency. Strong, well-organised relationship evidence is decisive — start early.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Years of hands-on experience but no formal qualification? RPL can turn that experience into a nationally recognised Australian qualification — assessed and issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), no classroom study. Practical preparation notes — the avoidable issues that most often slow down or unsettle otherwise good applications from China.
- Skipping qualification verification. Assessing authorities routinely require official verification of Chinese qualifications — commonly CHESICC verification reports for degrees and transcripts. Reports take time to issue in English; order them before you apply, not after the authority asks.
- Inconsistent pinyin romanisation. One-word versus two-word given names, hyphenation and spacing (Xiaoming / Xiao Ming / Xiao-ming) drift across documents and bookings. Match the passport exactly on every form, English-test registration and skills assessment.
- Counting on investor visas that no longer exist. The Business Innovation and Investment Program closed to new applications in 2024. Business owners should plan around skilled, employer-sponsored or — for genuinely exceptional records — National Innovation routes, not the old 188 streams.
- Study gaps left unexplained. Gaps between graduation and application, or a step down in course level, attract Genuine Student attention. A plain, documented explanation up front works better than silence.
Skills assessment notes for China

- CPA / CA ANZ — accounting remains a signature Chinese-applicant pathway, usually via Australian study; the assessment maps subjects to competency areas and carries its own English requirement.
- ACS — Chinese IT degrees are assessed on ICT content with verification of the qualification; Australian ICT graduates can strengthen their case with the Professional Year.
- Engineers Australia — China is a Washington Accord signatory through CAST, so graduates of accredited engineering programs are generally recognised; graduates of other programs use the CDR pathway.
- VETASSESS — general professional occupations — marketing, management and finance roles common among Chinese graduates — are assessed here, with degree verification standard practice.

Can I migrate to Australia from China?
Yes. Chinese citizens most often start with study (500 → 485) and move into skilled (189/190/491) or employer-sponsored (482/186) PR — accounting, IT and engineering are the classic conversions. Partner visas apply where your partner is Australian. Note that the old business/investor program closed to new applications in 2024, so business-background applicants now plan around skilled and sponsored routes.
Which occupations are in demand for migration from China?
Commonly in demand from China: Students → graduate work, Accountants, IT, Business & Investment. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority (for example ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, ANMAC for nursing, Trades Recognition Australia for trades, and CPA/CA ANZ/IPA for accounting). Occupation lists change, so confirm your occupation before you rely on it.
Is the Australian investor visa still open for Chinese applicants?
The Business Innovation and Investment Program (subclass 188), including the Significant Investor stream, closed to new applications in 2024. Current alternatives are the skilled program, employer sponsorship, and the National Innovation visa for people with exceptional achievements — a much narrower gate. Be wary of anyone still selling the old investor pathway.
Do I need to verify my Chinese degree, and how?
Almost certainly, yes. Australian assessing authorities generally require Chinese qualifications to be verified through official channels — commonly an English-language CHESICC (学信网) verification report for the degree and transcript — and some run their own checks as well. Order the reports early; they are a prerequisite for the assessment, not a formality at the end.
Can I get an Australian qualification through RPL from China?
Often, yes — if you have genuine, evidenced work experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess your existing skills against a nationally recognised Australian qualification, with no classroom study. Chinese applicants most commonly use it for commercial cookery and automotive trades. Be careful though: regulators cancel qualifications sold without genuine assessment, and whether an RPL qualification actually supports your skills assessment or visa depends on your occupation — get advice from a MARA-registered migration agent before paying anyone. How many points do I need for Australian PR from China?
Points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) require a minimum of 65 points, though competitive scores are usually higher and vary by occupation. Points come from age, English, skilled work experience, qualifications and state or family nomination. Use a points calculator and get advice before lodging an Expression of Interest.
Do I need a registered migration agent?
