- Occupation: Cafe or Restaurant Manager
- ANZSCO code: 141111
- Skill level: ANZSCO Skill Level 2
- Assessing authority: VETASSESS
- RPL relevant: Yes — see below (A nationally recognised VET qualification such as a Diploma of Hospitality Management can be obtained through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) with a registered training organisation (RTO). This is separate from the VETASSESS migration skills assessment, but a completed AQF Diploma-level qualification (assessed as comparable by VETASSESS) can help meet the Group C qualification requirement when paired with the required highly relevant managerial employment.)
Cafe or Restaurant Managers (ANZSCO 141111) organise and control the operations of cafes, restaurants and similar dining establishments. For skilled migration, VETASSESS is the assessing authority and treats this as a Group C occupation. Fast food or quick service roles are generally not accepted under this code and may instead align with Retail Manager (General) 142111.
The skills assessment & RPL pathway for Cafe or Restaurant Manager
VETASSESS assesses both your qualification and your employment for Cafe or Restaurant Manager. As a Group C occupation, it requires a qualification assessed as comparable to an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or higher. If your qualification is in a highly relevant field, one year of highly relevant post-qualification employment is required; if it is not highly relevant, two years is required. Your duties must show genuine managerial responsibility, including overseeing staff, controlling operations and managing sales and profit targets.
It is important to distinguish a VET qualification obtained via RPL from the VETASSESS skills assessment. An RTO can issue a hospitality management qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning, which recognises competencies for a certificate or diploma. That RPL qualification is not itself a migration skills assessment. VETASSESS separately evaluates whether your qualifications and employment match the nominated occupation for migration purposes. A completed, relevant AQF Diploma can support the qualification limb, but you still need the assessed employment to obtain a positive outcome.
Evidence typically required
- Detailed employment references on company letterhead describing managerial duties such as staff supervision, rostering, operations control and profit and loss responsibility
- Evidence of qualification assessed as comparable to an AQF Diploma or higher (award certificate and full academic transcripts)
- Payslips, tax records or superannuation statements covering the claimed periods of employment
- Organisational charts showing your position and the staff reporting to you
- Contracts of employment or appointment letters confirming your role and dates
- Evidence that the establishment is a cafe or restaurant rather than a fast food or quick service outlet (menus, photos, business description)

Frequently asked questions
Can I qualify if I manage a fast food outlet?
Generally no. VETASSESS does not accept fast food or quick service restaurants as an acceptable context for Cafe or Restaurant Manager 141111. If you manage that type of establishment, your role may instead align with Retail Manager (General) ANZSCO 142111. We can review your duties to confirm the most appropriate occupation before you apply.
Do I need a degree, or is a diploma enough?
As a Group C occupation, Cafe or Restaurant Manager requires a qualification assessed by VETASSESS as comparable to an AQF Diploma or higher, not necessarily a bachelor degree. If your qualification is in a highly relevant field, one year of relevant post-qualification employment is required; if not highly relevant, two years is required.
Is an RPL qualification the same as the VETASSESS assessment?
No. An RPL qualification issued by an RTO recognises your skills for a certificate or diploma award. The VETASSESS skills assessment is a separate migration process that evaluates your qualifications and employment against the nominated occupation. An RPL diploma can support the qualification requirement, but it does not replace the VETASSESS assessment.
