Australian Migration from Indonesia
Indonesia sits a short flight from Darwin, and the migration relationship shows it: students, hospitality and trades workers, and regional employers using DAMA concessions. Most Indonesian files are student files first — the pathway opens properly when the course, the funds evidence and the documents are lined up before lodgement.
Indonesian migration to Australia is led by students and skilled or sponsored workers in hospitality, trades and IT — with proximity making Australia a natural study and work destination.
Not sure if you qualify? Check your points — free

Study in Australia (and stay to work)
A Subclass 500 Student visa lets you study, and a 485 Temporary Graduate visa afterward lets you work — often a stepping stone to skilled or sponsored PR.
Skilled migration (points-tested PR)
If your occupation is in demand and you have the qualifications, English and a positive skills assessment, you may qualify for permanent or provisional skilled visas — no employer required.
- Subclass 189 — Skilled Independent (permanent, points-tested)
- Subclass 190 — Skilled Nominated (state nomination)
- Subclass 491 — Skilled Work Regional (→ 191 permanent)

Employer-sponsored work visas
If an Australian employer will sponsor you, the Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand) visa lets you work for 2–4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency via the 186 visa. Healthcare, trades, IT and hospitality are commonly sponsored.
Partner visas
If you are the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen or permanent resident, a partner visa leads to permanent residency. Strong, well-organised relationship evidence is decisive — start early.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Years of hands-on experience but no formal qualification? RPL can turn that experience into a nationally recognised Australian qualification — assessed and issued by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), no classroom study. Indonesian applicants most often use it for commercial cookery, hospitality and trades. Whether an RPL qualification actually supports your skills assessment and visa depends on your occupation — start with the free RPL assessment.

Practical preparation notes — the avoidable issues that most often slow down or unsettle otherwise good applications from Indonesia.
- The single-name passport problem. Many Indonesians have one legal name, while Australian forms want a family name and a given name. Inconsistent workarounds — name doubled, field left blank, name split — across the passport, forms and test bookings cause identity mismatches. Pick the passport’s convention and repeat it exactly everywhere.
- Untranslated Indonesian documents. Ijazah, transcripts, the kartu keluarga and civil documents need certified English translations from a qualified translator. Build translation time into the plan rather than discovering it at lodgement.
- Funds evidence built on balance alone. A healthy account balance without a visible source — salary, business records, documented family support — is where Genuine Student and financial-capacity assessments falter. Show where the money comes from, not just that it is there.
- Overlooking the regional route. Indonesian hospitality, trades and agriculture-adjacent occupations are exactly what regional programs (491, 494 and DAMAs, including the Northern Territory’s) are designed for — often with concessions on standard thresholds. Applicants who only look at 189/190 can miss their most realistic pathway.
Skills assessment notes for Indonesia
Every skilled occupation has a designated assessing authority, and each treats qualifications and experience from Indonesia in its own way. Full skills assessment guide by occupation →
- Trades Recognition Australia — assesses trades and commercial cookery — common for Indonesian applicants who study a trade in Australia or bring verified trade experience.
- VETASSESS — hospitality and tourism management roles — a natural fit for Indonesian hospitality backgrounds — are assessed on qualification level plus closely related employment.
- ACS — IT graduates are assessed on ICT content; the RPL route serves experienced developers without formal ICT degrees.
- Engineers Australia — check whether your program appears on Engineers Australia’s recognised accreditation lists; most Indonesian engineering graduates prepare a CDR.

Questions we get asked first
Can I migrate to Australia from Indonesia?
Yes. Indonesian citizens most commonly start with study (500 → 485), or with employer sponsorship in hospitality and trades — including regional options (491, 494 and DAMA agreements, notably the Northern Territory’s) that suit Indonesian occupations well. Points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) and partner visas round out the options.
Which occupations are in demand for migration from Indonesia?
Commonly in demand from Indonesia: Hospitality & Tourism, Trades, IT, Students → graduate work. Each occupation has a designated assessing authority (for example ACS for IT, Engineers Australia for engineering, ANMAC for nursing, Trades Recognition Australia for trades, and CPA/CA ANZ/IPA for accounting). Occupation lists change, so confirm your occupation before you rely on it.
I only have one name on my Indonesian passport — how do I fill in Australian forms?
Use the convention your passport’s machine-readable zone uses and keep it identical on every form, English test and skills assessment — mixing conventions creates identity mismatches that stall processing. Where a form forces both name fields, follow the issuing body’s guidance for single names and note it in your application rather than inventing a surname.
What are DAMA concessions and do they help Indonesians?
Designated Area Migration Agreements let regional employers sponsor occupations — and sometimes English, salary or age thresholds — outside the standard lists. The Northern Territory’s DAMA is the closest to Indonesia and covers hospitality and trades roles Indonesians commonly hold. You still need a sponsoring employer in the region; the concession attaches to the job, not to you.
Can I get an Australian qualification through RPL from Indonesia?
Often, yes — if you have genuine, evidenced work experience. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) lets a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) assess your existing skills against a nationally recognised Australian qualification, with no classroom study. Indonesian applicants most commonly use it for commercial cookery, hospitality and trades. Be careful though: regulators cancel qualifications sold without genuine assessment, and whether an RPL qualification actually supports your skills assessment or visa depends on your occupation — get advice from a MARA-registered migration agent before paying anyone. WIDEN advises on the pathway and refers you to an RTO; WIDEN does not issue qualifications.
How many points do I need for Australian PR from Indonesia?
Points-tested skilled visas (189/190/491) require a minimum of 65 points, though competitive scores are usually higher and vary by occupation. Points come from age, English, skilled work experience, qualifications and state or family nomination. Use a points calculator and get advice before lodging an Expression of Interest.
Do I need a registered migration agent?
You are not required to use one, but Australian migration advice should come from a MARA-registered agent (MARN holder), not an unregistered consultant. WIDEN is led by Keshab Chapagain, MARN 1576536, who advises on and lodges every matter personally after a paid consultation.
