Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

What Is RPL for CPR?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a process that allows individuals with relevant CPR skills and experience to gain a nationally recognised CPR qualification without having to complete the full training again.

If you’ve provided CPR in real-life situations, or have previously completed CPR training through work, volunteering, or life experience, RPL can be an efficient pathway to formally acknowledge your competency.

How Does It Work?

The RPL process for CPR involves:

  • Gathering Evidence: You must provide proof of your CPR knowledge and experience. Acceptable evidence can include past CPR certificates, workplace training records, incident or emergency reports, or third-party testimonials from employers or supervisors.

  • Competency Assessment: A qualified assessor will review your evidence against the current unit of competency—typically HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation—to verify your practical knowledge and skills.

  • Certification Outcome: If your experience meets the required standards, you will be awarded a nationally recognised CPR qualification without redoing the full training course.

Who Is Eligible?

You may be eligible for CPR RPL if you have:

  • Previously completed CPR courses or workplace training.

  • Hands-on experience providing CPR during emergencies.

  • Worked in roles such as aged care, child care, healthcare, security, or community services where CPR is regularly required.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow emergency procedures and use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).

Even if your certification has lapsed, you can still apply for RPL if your practical experience is current and well-documented.
