Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for First Aid – Basic Information & Overview

What is RPL for First Aid?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that recognises the skills and knowledge an individual has acquired through previous experience, training, or work—without the need for formal classroom learning. In the context of First Aid, RPL enables individuals to gain a formal first aid qualification based on what they already know and can do.

How Does RPL for First Aid Work?

The RPL process for First Aid involves:

  1. Evidence Collection: Applicants gather proof of their existing first aid skills and knowledge. This may include documentation such as training records, incident response reports, certificates of prior training, or references from employers.

  2. Competency Assessment: A registered training organisation (RTO) assesses whether the evidence meets the competency requirements of a nationally recognised First Aid course, such as:

    • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

    • HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

    • HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting

  3. Qualification Outcome: If the evidence aligns with the required competencies, the individual may receive full or partial credit toward a formal First Aid certification—without needing to repeat training.

Who Can Apply?

RPL for First Aid is suitable for:

  • Individuals with hands-on experience in first aid situations

  • Current or former Australian Defence Force (ADF) members

  • Security personnel, emergency responders, or remote workers

  • Individuals who have completed previous non-accredited training

  • Professionals who regularly apply first aid in their workplace or community

RPL is ideal for those who are confident in their existing first aid capabilities and are seeking formal recognition without duplicating training.
